@fasthard Thank you.
Frood AACalc Dicey / Sim / Odds Calculator: Updates and Opinions
-
Thanks. I’ve added a new subpage with some links to some preset scenarios - Pearl Harbour etc. You can play with them and tweak them this way or that to see how you like the odds for variations on certain “standard” battles.
Maybe there’s not much point. But now at least if there’s some glitch, I can be sent the link as a sort of “bug report” so I can reproduce the exact error.
-
What does frood stand for anyway? I’m assuming it’s an abbreviation for something of course.
And thanks for the praise. I’d just like to see it get to the point where you can hit the run button once and get the entire battle run with all the choices a human would make each round done automatically. But that’s just me. :P
Then again, I’d like a house rule that would allow partial retreats of ground forces….so frustrating when you’re doing much better then expected that you have to leave all those units out in the open or not take the land and finish the battle. heh
-
No, frood doesn’t stand for anything. It’s a word from the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. It refers to “a really amazingly together guyâ€as in “A person who really knows where his/her towel is.†See for example: “Hey, you sass that hoopy Ford Prefect? There’s a frood who knows where his towel is.â€
I was racking my brain for a good short domain name when this one just came to me two or three years ago. Not sure how it came to me at the moment, as I hadn’t read the book in a while – I just suddenly remembered it as I was trying to think of short words that might still be available as domain names.
For more definitions see http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=frood&defid=1247024 although one of them is also “moronic jerk” - oops! Oh well.
As for the defaults you’d like, spell them out exactly and I’ll make a link or a button to preload those options at once. It makes sense to have a quick way to toggle between sim and ADS modes.
Or, I could have it set cookies that would save your preferences, so you wouldn’t have to re-enter them.
-
Actually, to be honest, I’m a little nervous about trusting the machine to remember my OOL. That’s why I’ve never used the feature. :)
But my preferences would change on a per battle situation. Though, a common tactic is the strafe maneuver where you want to reduce your enemy’s stack without taking the land, so something that’d give you a 90% chance NOT to win would be good. (The best is to always leave em at 1 unit left, but that’s rare, seen it once on a Russia 1 attack on Ukraine and immediately decided that Germany should keep their silly airplane for the good of my tanks!)
-
Some updates:
Fixed bug where AA guns stayed selected in the form after running battle for a single round of combat once.
Added “D. units to be left alive” to simulate strafing attacks.
Added average battle duration to averaging mode.

Hey how come you are posting this thread under Revised when you can use your calc for many different games?
I posted a message to the mods here about a good place for us to post development stuff…

Dan,
I can’t seem to change defender OOL.
I tried moving BOM- first before inf and rolled 5,000x outcomes. It resets to default OOL for me.
Check it out I’m either doing something wrong or there is a glitch.

is there a space somerwhere. that happened to me. could barely see it.
-
I checked for a space but it doesn’t look like it. It looks like he’s changed this recently, because now each unit is separated by a hyphen ‘-’ when before it was separated by a space ’ ’
I know it was working for me before…
-
I just checked, worked for me to change OOL…
-
Check if you have cookies enabled maybe?
-
It works for me, but you have to be sure to move the ‘-’ as well, otherwise it does default to standard OOL.
-
I too had a problem editiing my OOL. Are you gguys sayings take out the dash or leave it in? Bcause I used the dash.
-
I haven’t seen problems myself, but obviously there is some issue that people are experiencing.
It would help if people would post here as code (next to the quote button) the full contents of the OOL box and also post the URL of the page as they’ve submitted it. -
Using IE6. My privacy settings were low, and I changed them to off (allow all cookies). Still wouldn’t work. It works fine on my home computer running Firefox.

You can see in this URL link it doesn’t kill the bomber on defense first:

I think I see the problem - IE6 seems to substitute the dashes in the OOL with spaces or underscores. Now that I’ve narrowed it down to an IE6 issue it should be an easy fix. Thanks Rob.

There is a reason true techies and gamers don’t use MicroShaft’s Internet Exploder 6.
-
Yeah, but good techies should test their web pages in IE6 too… :-P

I use it.
When I’m testing for interbrowser compatability.
Tee heez, it explodes, that sounds fun!
-
I think I fixed it - one little line was still operating on the assumption that OOL entries should be separated by spaces. Which makes me wonder why it worked at all in Firefox…
