I’m using a piece of rubber shelf liner (like ‘Grip-It’ on Amazon) between tabletop and each A&A board. Stuff is like $1 a roll at the grocery store. Slight dampening affect and definitely keeps things from sliding around.

No only minus 2.  So if the IPC value of surronding territories was 6 the sub would only subract 2 IPC.  It would take 3 subs (2x3) to subtract all 6 IPC.  Now if there were 4 subs in the sea zone (2x4=8) the nation would only lose 6 IPC because the value of the territories only equal 6.

Page 16 of the manual: “An island is a territory located entirely inside one sea zone”

Since New Guinea’s territories are located within 2 sea zones, it is not an island for game proposes and planes can’t be scrambled from airbases on them.

You can place airbases and naval bases anywhere. If any of New Guinea’s territories had an IPC value of 2 or more you could also build an IC there since it’s isn’t an island for game proposes.

New Zealand is considered an islands (pg. 3 of the Official FAQ).

Use the old Red Japanese A&AP Infantry for that - or potentially the old Yellow Japanese Infantry from A&A 2nd Edition.

Sounds like a good idea - care to post the full rule?

I am certainly not suggesting to buy another game JUST for the chips.  But if someone happens to have both, the chips are interchangeable.  In some long A&A games, more chips might be handy.  You could also use the Warlords black chips as 10s or to mean something else.

Multicolored mini poker chips rock. I use the crap out of them in my own game designs. In Pacific I use orange and yellow chips to indicate damage on installations. I match colors with counters in A&A minis land and naval to use as backings for the micron thin counters, or just by color in very large battles when I run out of counters.

Of course, it might be more trouble than it is worth to sort them or whatever.  I know some gamers combine game parts from different games into a big “pool” of game equipment.  I usually keep games and their parts separated, so it will take a bit of extra effort to dig out two games to play just one game but wanting extra chips.

Back in the day a friend of mine had a bad habit of “pooling” game equipment. He had a huge collection (thousands) of the airfix/revell 1/72 world war 2 soldiers all mixed together in a freaking tackle box. Most unpainted. It took hours to sort through them when we wanted to table top battle or “enhance” the original A&A. Not a fan of pooling.

The one thing i love about Pacific 1940 is that the map is very versatile…has anyone come up with some new starting points for Pacific 1940?  Such as a setup for a 1941 scenario with the Japanese offensives in the Pacific or a 1942 starting point with Japan at it’s height and the Allies have to strike back and take back what was theirs?

Personally, I’d be interested in a version similar to the original AAP where Pearl was setup first turn (and perhaps even that attack defender rolls at one) as other than unit setup the territory changes aren’t substantially different so it would be interesting to see play out.  However, the actual territories that Japan had conquered at that point were not substantially different in 42 other than the island colonies.  Basically, You’re always going to have crush china, and if the Allies are setup to strike back in 42 Japan might be in some serious trouble cause they still haven’t made any progress in Japan (they clearly fought worse than the TripleA AI).  If the game is in fact balanced in 1940, trying to balance it in 42 but still reflecting Japan’s successes and the Allies as ready to strike back, I’d imagine Japan would lose very quickly.

The FAQ has been updated with a clarification on New Hebrides.  It is treated in the same way as FIC.

Makes sense for game purposes considering the way it is marked on the map board.  :-)
