Messed up Russia slightly, I wanted to move the Livonia Artillery to Moscow knowing it would be covered by Infantry at the end of the turn, but I think the rule is that the Artillery could not be alone at any time (unless left on a Transport). Either way the troops in Livonia decline combat.

G3.tsvg pro-tip: if you need to decline battle, EDIT mode and add in a neutral and remove one of your own pieces (or all of them). Then after resolving combat, replace it/them in the “NCM” phase. Regarding the Russian artillery, it might have to be best to leave that as is for now. What you could have done was leave out a single infantry from your attack against Ukraine. That infantry remaining in Moscow would have allowed the artillery in Livonia to move to Russia.

I knew I could have left a Russian Infantry behind in Moscow but I decided it was better to send in all of them to reinforce Ukraine and deal with the likely loss of the Artillery. It’s not clear how adding in Neutral units to block a combat involves less GUI interactions than simply shuffling around a player’s own units. The Fighter leaving Livonia confused me as I thought it could not make such a move (even though it would be logical to do so), so I checked on the rules. This part of the moves for land units caught my eye: “Land units that begin your turn in contested territories can only be moved to territories that at the beginning of your turn were either controlled by your power or contained units belonging to your power”. I had been thinking that a retreating force could move into any territory controlled by their side, but this is not the case. A player might easily get caught out by this, especially in Russia, just like with the rule about hostile sea zones blocking Transport loading. You also mostly foiled my evil scheme to slightly expand the Italian income.

The best example of the usefulness of removing one of your own units and adding a neutral to a territory would be the G3 withdrawal from Belgium. The concept is not focused on reducing GUI interactions - its purpose is clarity of intent and aligning with oob rules. It makes obvious the areas where your opponent declined combat but remain in the contested zone. Making it a standard practice removes the common occurrence that amounts to “I forgot to not attack with this/these units, sorry about that (sometimes) extraordinarily critical roll”. Not a huge deal in most cases so no biggy.

I needed to use Edit Mode to place Fighters in a space to attack since their implementation on this map doesn’t allow them to pass through a hostile territory. So doing this did not spawn an air battle in the contested territory, presumably since this only gets triggered in the code based on move actions. To get around this you presumably have to place the Fighters in some other adjacent territory so they can move officially moved into the target.

My only concern is that you’re essentially declaring “no combat” after the roll is made and I’m worried about some future accident regarding that particular order of operations.
