The individual rounds were not very crazy - as you said I also had below average hits. But yours were 1-2 hits worse than mine and with sea battles this can escalate quickly and have a huge impact.And since ships are expensive, even small deviations from the average in sea battles can have a huge TUV swing.
This favours the allied attacker here, since I always have the options to retreat and you also have to consider your casualties, in case UK / Anzac will strike too.
