Iwo Jima Map

I believe around the year 2004 I purchased two great axis and allies maps created by a gentleman by the name of Ralph Boerke from Waterloo Canada.  The maps were laminated and the first one was a 1942 world map.  The second one was a Europe only map.  Anyways I just found both maps at my parents house. I have played the world map and loved it as Ralph included different rules for his game.  The Europe only map is huge! I never played it though :(. Has anyone ever played this A&A Europe map created by Ralph?  I know he was working on a pacific map also and wondered if he ever released it?

I think it might make more sense to just return Australia to a single territory rather than two.

I have tried games before testing the idea of splitting islands across sea zones (basically a reverse definition) it has the effect of making bombardments more significant, and fleets less likely to engage on attack (they tend to camp defend  relying instead on amphibious.) Splitting islands also increases fighter movement in a somewhat overpowered way, so you have to be careful. I think with an interesting starting unit placement you can accomplish a lot. Australia as a single territory would have greater reach for any fighters landed there, and the scale of the territory warrants it a bit more then solomons.

I think the best approach is to tilt Japan slightly counter clockwise at the southern tip of the island to make more room for ships. And then put the alignment for the smaller islands based of the relative distance between Australia Hawaii and the three major island territories (East Indies, Borneo, and Philippines). I will play up the focus on the key islands (though some of those chains were involved Palau and the Marianas and such. On the whole though I think the stepping stones out of W. USA would be the most interesting way to change the Pacific dynamic. Force both players to defend their coastlines instead of drop south so easily with everything.

Are we talking full-fledged rule changes or are we just changing the map around?

This particular thread is devoted to SIMPLE map changes (moving a border here or there) in order to make the OOB map more accurate to the actual borders at the time. No rules changes.

The size of Tunsia, Morroco, Gold coast, and Togoland should be increased.

Angola should connect to Kamerun. I know its historically accurate the way it is now, but it just feels so strange to have two territorys so close to each other, but have to spend an entire turn in Belgian Congo.

Munich border with Switzerland should be a bit more obvious.

Another SZ that splits up SZ 17. This new SZ is connected to Sicily, Naples, Rome, Tuscany, Piedmont, Sardinia, SZ 16, and the other SZ 17. This new SZ houses all of the Italian navy.

yes so to fix that you have hexes for land and spaces for sea, but the problem with that is the issue of national borders because pieces of both sides would technically be able to co-exist in the same hex.

That is the only reason why GMT makes ‘point to point’ movement maps… because they hate ‘area movement maps’

They hate them because its not a solution THEY came up with, but Larry Harris would take the credit because any area movement map that has been offered since 1980 owes its existence to larry.

Additionally, GMT are lazy sods because they have tons of photoshopped maps they didn’t even make and simply draw boxes on these maps and finish in a days work. Its totally disengenious of them among other things.

The other poster is correct about the ocean because the world is round and it should be harder to travel along the center, then at the ends. Hexes standardizes movement but does not offer a realistic solution to the earths round surface.

Well I have at last finished (sort of) a map for A&A Europe that I am happy with (Hey it took only 17 years and was started even bfore there was a A&A Europe :lol: ) It is I can say quite nice I worked on expanding a 1 inch by inch square area to a 1 and 1 half inch square area effectively doubling the size of the map. For example Canada is now four territories (Ontario, manitoba, Quebec and the Maritimes (Which is actually an island group)). meanwhile the German player has to deicde if he will move toward the economic heartland of Russia or toward Moscow. I decided to keep the original values for the territories hence alot of empty spaces with no value except for getting you where you want to go. Further this put them in somthing resembling original geographic positions (For example Solvokia is the industrial heatland of Czecheslovakia (now two territories))

Now I am ready to turn my attention to Conquest of the Empire I was wondering if it was up to you what would you import into the game from the new A&A series. I was thinking of either using the convoy system or the Supply line introduced in A&A Pacific to represent things such as the Egyptian grain convoys. Any suggestions?
