Both players have to be thinking both that they don’t want to give anything to their opponent and they want to a good position if htey end up with allies. I think that might lead to well placed but low cost units (which along with a fig or two makes the most sense in a standard bid game.

Whew, this is a tough one. Losing Taranto and having the Med go to Italy right off the bat is going to be a really difficult proposition. Will fight on, but this may be over pretty quickly.
