Question about Naval Bases

Regarding the Chinese territories controlled by Japan at the start of the game, I place Japan control markers on those territories when I set the board up. It’s a big help for me when one of those is liberated and the Japan marker removed as, later on, I quickly know who controls it at a glance. If Japan re-captures it, I place the marker back.

Awesome, thanks Krieghund… while you’re here, any chance we can get a brief explanation why this and the London NO for Germany were dropped in 2nd Edition?

He’s talking about old heavy bombers. The ones that rolled 2 dice @4 and kept both results. Those were pretty much game over.

Actually, the Old HB rolled 3 dice and kept ALL of the results. They only changed it to 2 dice in revised edition, and even that where overpowered.
They also did kept all of the results when stratbombing, AND there where no upper limit on how much damage you could do.

So, effectivly, if you get HB on round 1 with UK. You will build 2 HB as UK for round 1. UK round 2, you will hit germany with 3 HB and 9 dice doing an average of 31.5 IPC of damage (if all bombers get though). That is more or less the entire german economy (which starts at 32) gone from G3 and until the game is over.

So, HB in round 1 and it doesn’t matter if russia falls, bc germany will have zero production for the rest of the game.

Factories build planes.  Airbases are runways, hangars, fuel depots and ammunition storage.  I’m not seeing your connection at all.

In the same vein, Drydock factories build naval units which are then based out of Naval yards which house docks, fuel and ammo depots and support buildings, but not manufacturing facilities.

simply put: A&A success, and the type of generalization you are looking for, do not go hand in hand. like any complex game, the better the player the less likely you are to look at any given situation through a ‘rule of thumb’ type of lens. “Russia should play defensive?” What does that even mean? Russia should play well, end of story, and what that means depends on so many different factors it is impossible to meaningfully generalize.

Well of course, but the idea is that most of the time, the Soviets are focusing less on capturing German territories, and more on preventing the capture of their own, thus being defensive play. Granted, it’s not to say “Russia should never attack someone” but generally, they’re fighting more for protecting themselves than harming Germany.

I’m currently playing a game which we borrowed some house rules from the previous poster in this thread. We are using tech tokens for 5 IPC’s each, but you can only purchase as many tech tokens as you have Victory Cities. You can purchase tech tokens, but may not take the rolls unless you are at war. So to start out the game Germany could buy 2 tech tokens. If they fail that first roll, then the next turn they could buy 1 more if they had taken out Paris. If not then they could only keep using the 2 they had left over from the previous turn. This version has taken away a lot of the luck aspect of tech which is nice. It also limits the amount of tech you can roll a turn so no power has an excessive amount. Small powers also have a harder time getting them.
