I dont really know much about the USA. I read a little bit about the war 1773 and Boston Tea Party and about Civil war 1861-1865. But know I knew a lot of Iowa and I am surprised. Your State Its called in Germany: Idyll (very lovely place to live) between Mississippi and Missouri River. Your state has near the half of the land as my whole country and only 3 million people against 84 million in Germany. You need 40 million people to have it like in Germany.
Many German tourits write about the Loess Hills National Scenic Byway and Great River Road. Pictures looks great. And Des Moines looks a little bit european ?
