If Germany declared war on Russia and Russia has a surface war ship (CA) in SZ116 making it a contested SZ, how can Germany load troops from Germany (or any other land territory) into transports in SZ 116 (now a contested SZ)? See p. 13 Sea Units Starting in Hostile Sea Zones. It’s my understanding that the 6 infantry and 6 arty from Germany could not reach SZ 113 and attack the UK. The transport could leave SZ 116 and go elsewhere to pick up troops, but just not from SZ 116.

Oh because there is an exception for the first turn that a power declares war. See Europe rules, P12 “During your
Combat Move phase in which you entered into a
state of war, your transports that are already in sea
zones that have just become hostile may be loaded in
those sea zones (but not in other hostile sea zones).
In effect, transports may be loaded in their initial sea
zones for amphibious assaults before war is declared,
while the sea zone is still friendly.” -
Good grief. Thanks for the lesson. Needed to know that rule before the R-2 turn. Need to rethink Ally defense. Will get back to this weekend when I have some time.

Sorry about that. So that is why you thought you could put troops on the border in E Poland, because the Cruiser would be preventing the declaration of war.

Yes, I figured that Germany would not declare war on Russia, because it would need the troops in Germany to ensure the attack on the UK was successful. Had I been better informed, I would have left the CA were it was to block a transport invasion of Russia and retreated the Russian land units.

This would have meant Germany using what land troops were available in W. Germany and Norway and its air to ensure a successful Sea Lion. I could have ignored the USSR Cruiser if I had not declared war on USSR. I think the damage was done by UK1. You could have saved the 6inf+1AA on the USSR border and dice made it more decisive than might have been expected. Going to be uphill for the European allies here. But in the Pacific you have done well by sinking 3CVs! Still not sure if it will be enough because you don’t have the reinforcements coming to capitalise and it looks like Japan will be able to rebuild.
