Rules clarification

That depends on how dull the knife is, though.  My husband’s mother has knives so dull I use her spoons to cut my food.  Lord knows the knife is completely useless!

There are numerous errors in the rule book that comes with the game.  You may want to check out Larry Harris Tournament Rules (which are available from a link on the main page of this website).

The only “opening fire” that repeats after the first round of combat is Submarine Sneak Attack.

BB Shore Bombardment and AA fire are limited to only opening fire of the first round of combat.

When it comes to the rules, I have NEVER known him to be wrong.

While I try real hard to get it right, that doesn’t mean I’m not wrong from time to time. :-D

Plus, I have people like Blackwatch to bounce things off if it is really convoluted. :-o

If you are referring to the original A&A (Classic), then I don’t think that was the rule.  You could always load/unload in the same turn, to my knowledge.

yes, but it costs money so you could - literally - through the game away researching it or maybe snatch a victory out of the jaws of defeat.

Both land and naval units that engage in combat remain in the area of combat and cannot be moved in the non-combat phase.  Retreated units have to stay in the territory/sea zone they were retreated to.  The only units that can move after Combat (and in fact HAVE to move in almost all cases) are aircraft.

If you need a basis in reality for this rule, consider those forces to be being re-supplied, repared, reinforced, replacing casualties, etc. as well as securing the area, reparing damaged infrastructure (bridges, airfields, etc) during the non-combat phase.  For retreated units, consider them to be regrouping, replacing lost equipment, etc.

i think this rule is needlessly confusing because it’s not that beneficial or realistic for going through the added hassle of keeping enemy units on the board as prisoners. i also think this topic should be moved to house rules forum.
