    Marathon cavalry battle in the Congo. With all your misses, I had a chance to whittle (or in your case “wittle”) you down, but at least I took 1 down with me. Ha, my lone German sub caused a panic in France and they built 2 DDs. Unfortunately, France had enough income to also build troops everywhere else.


  • @fmerwinrommel I had my 5 year old watching the dice rolls with me. He felt my anxiety too. Were 25 rolls , before I got a hit.
    Wasn’t going yo get 2 DDs; instead get Seb to buy one . Then I spent my money and had some left over , so I decided that I could spare him the expense.
    Had a Cheeky CR win over your BC and Pacific TT too.

    No way for Germ to reduce French income except the usual taking Champ. And even that will be tough with Brit in control of EngChan to convoy troops. The Kriegsmarine is having a poor showing in this game, in the Atlantic and Pacific. I was friends with a really nice man who had been a young sailor on a mine sweeper in the Kriegsmarine during WWII. He was captured by the Russians, survived a prison camp and emigrated to the U.S. He has since passed away.

    @elrood Allies start out with big advantage in income and units, just like in WWII global games. CP has some offensive advantage to gain on the allies, like in Global WWII; but not anywhere near like with WWII Germany and Japan. Tech luck has a major effect in 1914, both in getting a tech and which tech. In our game, the Kriegsmarine has been sunk without inflicting much damage due to poor dice, giving Allies free reign much too early globally and especially in feeding ground troops into the Western front. And Austria is already in trouble. But from my limited experience, there are so many theatres of war and differences in players, that its too early to tell.


  • 1914 is more defensive than WWII global, without tanks, bombers and planes on offense and with trenches and HGs for defense. So unless a major slip up, its a slow slog. That doesn’t necessarily mean games last longer. At some point, one side realizes they can’t win or will eventually lose, and decides to concede. Experienced players can find ways to reach targets quicker. In global WWII, an experienced Axis player can reach Moscow quickly with tanks and mech and then bypass it for the Mideast. In 1914, the location of the Russian capital, the number and shape of the territories, the Russian income and defensive advantages is so different. I’m ready to soldier on for now.

    @fmerwinrommel i can agree, but from the few games i had yet, it really seems disadvantsgeous to attackers. 9 PUs for 3 trenches stop even a good army for a turn and next round it just gets harder.

    Also. I find the “low to hit” numbers tricky. I mean in Napoleon an here most units hit at only 1 or 2. Means if you roll a battle round just 3’s and up you miss pretty much all.

    In G40 thats usually not the case with tanks, bombers and fighters dominating the scene.

    Overall is the same odds but the variance seems off. I mean here i have seen 90+ % battles fail profoundly. In G40 that does not seem to happen as often…

    @elrood German stormtroopers and UK/Fra colonials have potential to change that. With barrage tech giving art attack 3 and supporting stormtroopers also getting attack 3. However, they are still slow movers and Berlin is far from the frontlines. And despite Germany’s large income, its difficult to reserve enough cash every turn to build large numbers of stormtroopers. Tech allows higher attack units, but tanks have minimal defense compared to WWII; late fighters are expensive; and gas lasts just one round. So they can help take a territory but little or no help against a counterattack (fighters can’t land, gas is destroyed).

    @elrood Tech luck is a big factor in 1914. I’ve seen Italy and France and others get propaganda tech (3 inf in capital) on round 1 after spending just 5 pu for 1 tech die.
