@martin does the investment of 30 IPC in Romania make the difference on the Eastern front? I have not seen others buying that factory - maybe it is wrongly invested money which could have bought mechs and tanks instead?
-
@martin I had another look and give up. Congratulations, Trulpen! Germany failed on the Eastern front. Japan struggles to take India and is now underpowered on its home front. And my play for Italy was not really helping Germany. You have chosen wisely how to invest the bid :-)
Once again, I do not see THE ONE mistake I did. It was just seeing the tightening loop starting round 3 or so. Of course I did some mistakes like losing the Japanese ACs etc, but I would not see this as decisive for the whole match. I think I might go for a J1 attack again in other matches, as Japan needs money quickly.
Thank you again and good luck with the other matches!

@martin Competitive games never see a MIC in romania. So thats the first clue. If you do find a game where one was used despite its shortcomings, it was probably used to buy inf closer to the front immediately. You spent 30 ipcs in Rd 3 and got zero value from it in the game. You didnt really use it much early on and when did use it you bought mech. You could have just as easily used the 30 ipcs to buy mech to deploy in Germany and then just bought mech in subsequent turns.
Just a huge waste of money early on which slows your push on russia and allows them to build an overwhelming force which you wont ever push through.
Your G1 was pretty suspect and pretty much set the tone for a rough game in europe. I would try a more conventional opening. A lot of ground losses on G1 where ground losses are really bad for germany early on. No reason to attack SFr and Normandy. Dont dilute the attack on Paris. And given the choice between 110 and 111 always go 110. Germany bought navy and still left UK the option to buy an airfield and a factory without consequence - devastating for axis. I didnt look at all, but saw a lot of troubling signs in G1-G3 and axis cant afford a slow start.
Didnt look at anything else but those mistakes are hard to overcome.

That’s a huge investment. Like ksmckay says, it’s if anything used to be able to build slow-movers closer to the front. The question is if it’s efficient enough?
We can look a bit on the math. Building a MIC costs 30. The turn after it’s possible to build inf and art there. For simplicity and the comparison of inf vs mech, lets say 10 inf are built.
The alternative is of course to build mechs in Berlin. 10 mech costs 40. So you save 10 IPC from building 10 inf instead of 10 mech. But you have to build 30 inf over 3 turns in order to get square with 30 mech because of the cost of the factory.
After 3 turns, you do get an economic advantage from the factory itself, of sorts. The problem here though is tempo. The mechs from Berlin reach for instance Ukraine at the same time (2 turns) as inf from Romania. Considering not being able to build units in a fresh factory, the mechs would even reach Ukraine 1 turn ahead of the romanians.
Simply put, mech is the golden unit for Germany.
In the beginning of the game tempo is of essence, especially for Axis. Germany needs to push not only strong, but also fast against the russians in order to succumb them. If it’s goes too slow, the advance will halt and the situation will be very annoying for the nazis.
In OOB Russia is doomed from the start, but it needs a dedicated push. Germany should be able to take down Moscow by G6 no matter what.
When it comes to a J1DOW, I’ve never employed it myself, but it’s my impression that it’s a killer opening in OOB.
As ksmckay also pointed out, it’s more important to target the UK-fleet in z110 than z111. The latter one is a bit out of place and might be taken out in the following turn. I like to do a strafe on z111, keeping Bismarck alive. Feel free to check out the Germany Playbook for ideas.
One thing I thought of is that you should take more care to deny the opponent NOs. Like Russia’s NO. My experience is that Russia never gets it in OOB. You let me have it several turns, which wasn’t necessary. A sub in z125 is sufficient until G has taken firm hold of Archangel.
I can try and look a bit more close at the game and get back to you later, if you want.
-
Ah, and the infamous attack on z37. You should’ve kept a des there and it would’ve been untouchable. Even so, ANZAC was very lucky in the attack, not even losing a sub, but I think without the air in play there were advantageous odds for the attack.

I believe that Italy’s main task in the early game is to act as can-opener for Germany. It’s vital to be able to make swift progress on the eastern front. So, enough land and air to threaten key-areas and make blocking too expensive.

@ksmckay only now, after 10 months, I noticed that you also jumped in and gave me newbee precious comments… Greatly appreciated - thank you very much:+1: ! At the time, I was under the impression that all comments to my game came from Trulpen.
After one year at axis&allies.org, I love the community and find it awesome that strong players play weaker and newer players and give precious advice to improve the gameplay.
