Well, given the odds the battle was an obligation for the Rising Sun. I had also prepared the option of retreating with atleast two undamaged carriers. With normal dice it would’ve been ok, I reckon, but sure, I was counting on a counter-attack.

I’m not happy with the result, but atleast one upside is that the main problem for the US is the logistics of getting units into play. Thus Japan got a small respite in the Pac. Not looking forward to the situation in a few rounds though. 😉

Interesting, if you had retreated after 2 rounds to SZ55, you would have had a fleet of 2 damaged BBs, Cruiser, 2CVs 2ftr 2tac, to withstand attack from 1sub, 2ftr, 1BB, 3bomb. Then (theoretically) UK, and a 3rd ANZAC attack of a 4ftr and a sub. I think you should have lost the ships and just retreated some planes. Or perhaps landed on NT so you had a landing spot for your planes if I attacked. Or both. Actually, taking NT would have meant ANZAC could only use the sub and UK couldn’t attack. Unless USA could liberate it. Also, an ANZAC crush could have been on. I guess all that is hindsight.
I see your point about it being an obligation though.

Yes, but that is with killer dice from US and sucky dice for Japan. My evaluation of the battle was that the situation would look a bit different. But it’s hard to evaluate.

But a lot of air, and my plan was to keep the ac’s intact. Atleast 2. But after the first round of battle, I knew it wouldn’t be possible, but had to press on.

Oh I see. I’m in two minds about bringing in CVs if you don’t want to damage them straight off. In some ways it makes it easier to deal with bad dice but others harder because you can only retreat.
Oh, retreating to SZ46 was why New Guinea was taken.

I think I had to bring in the ac’s anyway, since most air only had one move left. Unless I just sacrifice all of them, but that wasn’t my intention.
