Rules - Phase 2 Zombies Attack

Having said that: being VERY far removed from your level of (tacit) knowledge of all things A&A among some of the guys (sorry no ladies unfortunately) that I play with I am known as ‘the guy that is looking for rules issues and strange/improbably combinations of rules…’ - and in this case: cards :)

Fortunately @Krieghund already answered all of your questions. Just some remarks from me.

If you attack a zombie in you own territory, do they bite on an A or a D? ie are you defending your territory, or attacking the zombies?

The way I see this: The Zs are just conducting their battle phase, their throwing of the dice. And then the ‘D’ results can not be assigned. Just see this as a regular battle.

Can you hold a territory just with a plane in it, if it has a zombie - or do you also need a land unit there as well?

Very good question. Good you asked this so this could be clarified. Please mind that Zs can hit your - expensive! - plane in their next ‘Zs Attack’ phase.

If a single plane attacks a single zombie within a group of zombies (in a friendly territory held with other units), do all the zombies bite or just the one that the plane is attacking?

As far as I know in standard Axis and Allies games you never attack a specific unit…

Yes, you can.

So Dave and I took another crack at this and in preparation for the Gencon Tourney, took out all but 2 of the escalation cards. Didn’t play with a bid this time, I was the Allies.

Taking the Escalations out works well. I support this change–there are 6 copies (including the identical Zombie Rise) in the deck to start. Greg’s rule also says that you can’t draw a second escalation when you are resolving the first–at most you will draw 2 cards.

OOB, having 6 Escalations and also reshuffling them back into the deck, led to more confusing and overlapping play. Sometimes you could have 3-4 cards active, all at once–this rule change means at most you will get 2, and at most, twice per game. Even if you aren’t playing with the Tournament Rules, I’d suggest removing escalation (and zombie rise) from the game when they appear, then they can at most be seen 6 times.

Almost every new player I’ve introduced to this version said “dang, why do we keep drawing that draw two card!” Having 3-4 special powers/rolls on one turn seems kind of abusive and too luck driven (one game we had 2 of the “draw special reinforcements” and so the Russians got 3! free units for each of 3! zombie liberated territories).

Striker, thanks for reply. I thought about analogy between submerged submarines and Zs too. Seems the analogy is not 100 % though indeed.

2023 UPDATE

As we finally played AAZ again we were wondering:

Did more people interprete this rule wrongly?
Namely that you had to destroy ALL Zs that were present in an Z-controlled area?

If I introduce players to AAZ it seems all of them expect this to be the case: that you only get the bonus if ALL Z-units are destroyed.

It’s a great idea, and you can do all sorts of goofy stuff in a 1962 setting including an alien invasion event that could force the US and USSR to work together. Plus why not cash in on the new Red Scare consuming the US’s news cycle?

I’ve gotten over the shock, and now every time I see this board on the forums I get a good laugh.  I honestly cannot wait until this comes out just so I can watch someone talk about it on youtube.
