Max defense for SZ 97 made sense. I gambled and kept 2 subs hoping for a first strike against the Italian BB. Cost 2 fighters, but the objective was to rid the Med of the Italian navy (and take back Malta).
Sorry, did not see your follow-up message. As you can see, US forces retreated after achieving their goal in Round 2. I assumed you wanted the surviving Italian fighters to land in S. Italy, but of course, you can place them elsewhere.
I was beginning to wonder whether the Italian investment in an AB and extra fighters was worth it (instead of just troops). In my game with Giallo, he just asked for scramble in SZ97, and when he saw my OOL with more than 3 fighters, he realized I had an AB in N. Italy and called off the attack. I would have put a fighter in N. Italy, to help defend against UK invasion. I can adjust on my turn.

Edit was to undo a NCM for sub in sz 112. Its frustrating for Germany not to be able to project itself more in the Med. A big bomber fleet built up over many turns would help, combined with subs. Normally, I would have Germany take Vichy France. so it can build subs in the Med. But a ground troop wasn’t available when I wanted to take out Vichy. I don’t want to have to buy an I.C. in Yugo. I moved 14 troops into Bry, but its still not enough to conquer Moscow, despite Russia not building.

I knew Russia might build fighters, but didn’t calculate what it would do to the air battle odds if you built that many. I’m going to have to build more fighters and air defenses and make other adjustments.
