Despite Japan’s big income last turn, I couldn’t do everything that I wanted to do. Had to forego moving in force into W. India or moving towards Africa. to face China. I chose to build a massive fleet to try to force you out of the central Pacific.
The disastrous first turn battle of Yunnan is still affecting me now. China had a 1 in 81 chance of a perfect 4 for 4 hits. I rolled 2 hits vs an expected 3.5 hits. Together, that’s about 1 chance in 142. If Japan had taken out the Chinese in round 1, or at least 3 of them, I would have taken a plane as a hit and taken Yunnan. I suffered more casualties and China got a N.O. and was able to build 2 art. China retreated and left 3 empty spaces around its army. If it only had a fighter, Japan would have occupied those 3 spaces. But with the 2 arts, China could have efficiently countered in all 3 spaces. Attacking only with infantry is risky. So Japan would have needed at least 2 units per space, which I didn’t have. So China generated 1+ units per turn, vs less than 1 unit without art. And, Japan generated less income per turn. Traditionally, I build I.C.s early in China. But this game, I tried your strategy to build a stronger fleet first. When I lost Yunnan and Russia kept most of its army in Sakha, I should have modified my strategy and built I.C.s and troops sooner.
