I find Axis and Allies Guadalcanal a very flawed game. In a battle where planes attach ships, in the air combat the phase, which you have to do even though no planes for the enemy are present, the planes can’t kill a ship, - not on the battle box -but the ships can kill the plane. So ships get two chances to kill the planes and planes only get one chance to kill. That is unfair.

This is incorrect. First the sea units fire at the air units, and then the air units fire at the sea units. The sea units do not get 2 chances to hit the air units.

In a land battle where only planes are attacking, there could be ships on the zone next to the island, but they can’t kill anybody because the battle box only has land units listed.

True, sea units cannot hit air units attacking on land.

Ant the planes can kill land units without land units being able to fight back.

This is not entirely true. While antiaircraft guns are the only land units that can fire at air units, they do so before the air units can attack. This makes it unwise to leave your land units within range of enemy air attack without the protection of antiaircraft guns and/or air units.

I’m not playing this game again.

That is, of course, your choice to make, but you probably owe it to yourself to read the rules again and correct your errors in execution before writing this game off.

A little over a month ago I started work on a custom board based on the original design of the Spring 1942 board. I spent about 4 hours every morning and four hours each night for a whole week designing the new map. It is 55 inches by 36 inches.

It started off with me taking the original board and taking several pictures of it. I took a single photo of each of the six panels, and closeups of the production chart, mobilization zone and of course took a top-down image as you see here.

I used this top-down image as the reference to start outlining. I knew that there was a lot of distortion from the photo I took, but that’s no matter to me, it adds to the character if things don’t look 100% accurate.

After the fourth night, I officially had completed the outlining. I wanted to keep all of the coastal details that were in the original game. I knew based off geological maps that the coastlines in this game look almost nothing like the real ones, but it was too big of a detail to not keep.

After the outlining was done, I threw over some kinda decent textures into each zone and blended wooded to desert areas. It was so fast of a thing to do that I didn’t get progress pictures. This photo however shows some of the zone colors I decided to do, and the art direction I took.

I added in the text and logo designs, altered the filters I threw over the map and ended up with this as a somewhat final product.

Here is a picture of the entire map completed that also featured a similar under-running board. Each side has their own IPC chart, the battle strip is integrated, the casualty zone is integrated and the mobilization zone is updated and integrated.

The next step was to go to www.bagsoflove.com and order a testing sheet of the Neoprene so I could confirm the print quality. It arrived and everything was to size and looked great!

If you guys want to use this design, here’s a Google Drive link you can use to download it. It should be 11,000 x 7,200 with 200 x 200 per inch. Bags of Love did a great job with the print, however they took out the 5 pixel black border I had around it but that’s no matter to me! Be sure if you use Bags of Love, make sure it’s printed on a white background so you can keep that border but it doesn’t change much of the map if it is gone. A number of places aren’t fond of this size of project, so please do your own research before going with your service of choice. Enjoy this map! It is heavily inspired by Imperious Leader’s design, more of the fact he did it rather the actual design.

Thank you for all the great compliments folks! I chose this set for its relatively small number of pieces and it represents one of the battles that most interested me in the pacific campaign.

I watched a part of a Guadacanal History Channel presentation last night and it really makes you want to go right out there and buy the game.

It is only a matter of time now!

I think me and my friend technically played ‘to the death’.

I just bought Guadalcanal about a week ago (and bought AAP40 yesterday :-D), and played my first full game with my friend on Friday night. We played from about 7.30-2.00, it was pretty awesome.

Anyway, I played Japan and he the US, and from the first turn he took Guadalcanal, and from there proceeded to mass a sizable navy which gave me a lot of trouble, as well as a decent air force. It was hard going for me, though I had a strong presence on Bougainville and Choiseul. Most of my efforts went into maintaining my navy (which was massed in zones B and F), and AA guns (which I sent to Bougainville and Choiseul), to combat his navy and planes.

Towards the end there was a decisive battle, in which I almost overpowered his navy (this, I think, would have almost led me to victory then and there - he had almost no units behind about zone G), but alas, he rebounded and from there I was a goner.

In a fit of desperation I started making rules such as ‘last stand’ (where Japanese transports get 10 attack each - it was late at night), but he still defeated me with something like 3 battleships and a menagerie of other ships.

I made him attack my base directly, and he simply blew my 15 or so infantry units right out of there with his battleships, and that was that.

It was a lot of fun though, and my friend (who usually plays Xbox 360 all day) seemed to enjoy himself, and is keen to play AAP40.

Cool, thanks for the link. Here is a FAQ I have. What do we have to do to get the replacement Cruisers? I can’t wait to Guadalcanal tomorrow!!! Too bad I have to work and won’t be able to try it until Saturday. :x
