AARHE: Phase 3: land Combat

I would love to hear more about your Most Precious Soviet Strategies. I love talking about strategy, especially if it’s about my favorite power when it comes to tactical decision making 😀

D12 version I use in a 1941 variant of HBG Global War:

Incorporates SPA / SPG / Motorized Infantry / Light & Medium Armor / Commander (General).

I use National Advantages to address Heavy Armor (Russia & Germany).

Cost/Move/Attack/Defense

INFANTRY:  3 / 1(2) / 2(3) / 4(6)
Combined Arms: Attack on (3) when supported 1:1 by Artillery or SPA.
Defend on (6) during 1st round of combat when supported by Fortification (10:1).
Move (2) during Combat or NCM when supported 1:1 by Mortorized Infantry.

ARTILLERY: 4 / 1(2) / 3 / 4
Combined Arms: Increase Infantry Attack to (3) when supported 1:1.
Move (2) during Combat or NCM when supported 1:1 by Mortorized Infantry.

SELF-PROPELLED ARTILLERY (SPA): 6 / 2 / 4 / 4
Combined Arms: Increase Infantry & Mech Infantry Attack +1 when supported 1:1.
Initial Bombardment: On Defense, successful hit results in immediate removal of enemy land unit.
Cannot Blitz.

MOTORIZED INFANTRY: 4 / 2 / 3 / 3
Transport (1) Infantry or (1) Artillery 2 spaces during Combat or NCM Move.
Cannot Blitz.

MECHANIZED INFANTRY:  5 / 2 / 3(4) / 4
Combined Arms: Attack on (4) when supported 1:1 by SPA or any Armor.
Combined Arms: Blitz when supported 1:1 by any Armor.

LIGHT ARMOR: 6 / 2 / 5 / 5
Combined Arms: Increase Mech Infantry Attack +1 when supported 1:1.
Combined Arms 1:1 allows Mech Infantry to Blitz.
Blitz.

MEDIUM ARMOR:   7 /  / 2 / 6(7) / 6
Combined Arms: Attack on (7) when supported 1:1 by Tac Bomber.
Combined Arms: Increase Mech Infantry Attack +1 when supported 1:1.
Combined Arms 1:1 allows Mech Infantry to Blitz.
Blitz.

SELF-PROPELLED GUN: 8 / 2 / 6(7) / 7
Attack on (7) while enemy Armor is present.
Non-Infantry Land unit must be chosen as casualty.
Combined Arms: Blitz when supported 1:1 by any Armor.

COMMANDER (General): - / 1 / - / -
Fixed number of Commanders per Nation.  If destroyed, replaced on fixed turn schedule by nation.
Coordinated Attack: Provides (1) called shot against any Land unit during 1st round of Combat.
Organized Retreat: Allows Land & Air units to retreat after 1 full round of Combat. No Defense rolled in round 2.

OK.  Cost of the IC is not an issue.  Understand when IC costs vary between $5 - $15.    Does that also mean than if the factory is in China or Middle East, for example, in a Country with 3 IPC where they can produce 4 x 3 = $12 of units that they could build 1 ftr and 1 tank?

They may have the resources and technology, but I agrue they would not have the skilled labor to do this (then).  I am not aware that either the Allies or Axis built planes or tanks, etc in 3rd world countries.

but no can’t build 1 ftr ($10) + 1 tank ($5) because thats $15

“4 x IPC  income” is meant to be a simple rule to control both

*what you can build (eg. UK can’t build Carrier at India)
*how much IPC you can build

Or am I getting too anal here and sacrificing game play for realism?  Just looking for a clarification of the intent of the game, not trying to change any rules.

no we love your feedback
we just have to work it out

AARHE wants realism and gameplay
specific listings were avoided if possible

simple number based rules are good structure wise
you set a model and stick to it

unfortunately this requires numbers on the map to be realistic to start with
so some things don’t work out prefectly on some territories of the OOB map

but we are bound to overlook things, over time we discover alternative simple rules that leads to even greater realism

I feel a complex pattern might make it slightly harder to read the text on the printed thing
maybe just go along the line of one compact and one pretty presentation version

so would be nice to have additionally a simpler one for “comfort zone” reasons
it would look similar to revised OOB in colours patterns and style

Along the lines of what you have proposed:
I am not sure about the suitability of having ports have any defense, but rather coming up with a unit that can adress a number of characteristics of a fortified territory (think maginot defenses).

REPAIR DAMAGED BATTLESHIPS
Battleships are powerful units. A damaged battleship may be repaired if it is in a sea zone adjacent to a territory with an IC controlled by its country. The repair costs are equal to the roll of one d6. The battleship may not move or participate in combat during the turn of repair. The repair is complete at the end of the players turn.

Fortresses
These units can be added to any controlled territory for the cost of 10 IP and can defend only with two rolls each combat round with a defense value of 3/3.They “protect” the defending units from direct attack. The units inside the fortress cannot be affected by attacking combat rolls until the fortress is destroyed by a roll of 1 only. Once built they cannot move and if destroyed cannot be reused by enemy forces. The maximum number of fortresses is limited to the IP value of the territory and in the case of China is limited to one.
