I always find it fascinating how in a game that does involve luck in quite a substantial way, some players are still so consistently strong and come out top of the league year in year out.
JWW used to say that.
Strategy/skill/experience/tactics, not blundering, and ability to adapt, like to bad dice, is much more influential than dice in G40 A&A. I think was true of AA50, too. Did I mention the psychological warfare, and imposition of will? Even speed of play can affect.
Consider - Every move in Monopoly except whether to get out of jail by paying money or using a card, is determined by dice or random cards. The entire path of your token for the entire game is pre-determined and you make decisions based on that. Yet with such a big role for dice, a better and more experienced player will rarely lose to an average or casual player.
In my review of one of these big games, the players avoided big battles and it was almost entirely posturing, logistics and economics. There were probably 3 or 4 big battles, almost all taking place in the first round with high precentage odds going in.
It’s like when a general retreats without firing a shot because his position is untenable.
-
Yes, that’s almost exactly what I said a page earlier @crockett36
Gamerman seemed to disagree, but I still stand with my opinion: Especially when playing against better players than myself, I seem to not even get a chance to get lucky.
Of course I can always get small deviations from the average in many small battles which could add up. A prime example is China - land units for both sides are extremely valuable here and if one side just always hits 1/1 with 0.33 expected hits, this can change the whole outcome. But apart from this, I rarely get a chance for even doing big attacks (when playing better players). And they usually only attack when victory is nigh certain in huge battles.

Ghostglider’s Allies defeat my Axis in BM.
https://www.axisandallies.org/forums/topic/40110/l23-bm4-ghostglider-allies-12-vs-roboto-axis/137
This is a great example of what I was just talking about.
The first big battle came in the last round (round 15), when I finally got a big TUV change of +92, but it was too little too late.
In fact, my Axis still have all big army chunks left: Germany’s core land army is still there, Japan’s land army is big and the Japanese Navy has basically never fought besides some skirmishes with blockers. -

It helps the ego a little. We are on the WORLD WIDE WEB. So,some of these guys are the Bjorn Borg’s of Axis and Allies. Take comfort that you get to be on the same court.
Studying two great players is really informative. Look at their purchases, their stats (particularly piece counts and income). I don’t care (yet) about TUV. You have to adjust it for A vs A inflation, which is difficult and ever changing.
Also where they place their bid and where they assemble their troops. I never understood the importance of Caroline Islands in the Pac, but it is vastly superior to 54 or 1 or 26.

I respond to crockett - here - to keep from gumming up the post game results thread -

(Or you can just type in topic 40188 and it takes you there)
It’s just about watching stats and whether they can give you a feel of how well each side is doing

Mainah (Allies+18) vs Simon33 (Axis) BM4
Simon33 over Mainah. I made too many mistakes, and simon caught every one of them, and then some.

One more point from me - if you know your opponent is better than you and won’t give you shots on his units, you can in turn give him shots on yours that you other wise wouldn’t. If he’s so risk averse because he knows he’s awesome, then you can get away with leaving less defense. He still won’t attack it, and maybe if he does, you get lucky. But if you don’t roll dice, you’re toast, right? So at least up your chances by defending with fewer units.
I know that’s really hard to do and goes against our experience. We HATE to get attacked and destroyed. But when you’re up against Goliath, you’d better try a different strategy than just dying. Dying is not a strategy.

Welcome back, Mainah.
Always nice to have a veteran come back after a break -
Thank you sir, although I am unsure I warrant veteran status - especially with my showing with simon. We’ll go with re-enlisted.

Elche’s Allies+15 beat my Axis in BM4.
After a successful sealion I already saw myself winning. However, playing extremely bad with Japan - usually my strong suit - made everything crumble and the final nail in the coffin was a tactical mistake I made with Germany that gave Russia a chance for a lucrative battle… which the dice made even worse and netting me a whopping -103 TUV in a single battle.

Trigger warning! So I play this game immersively. Meaning that if I think a general like Rommel would do it, I do it. That’s the difference between the general and his staff. I’m betting most of the top guys here would be great staff members with a background in math. Would that translate on the battlefield?
I’m not saying my way would translate on the battlefield except that I’m practicing courage and audacity! I’m re-enacting ww2. And I like it.
Muuuuuuch more to say, but it must wait.
-
@crockett36 I know by the way there was is a lot of math at military college. I have for instance Sherman s logistics and it effect in winning the cw.
-
@crockett36 “love Sherman s” not have.
-
@crockett36 dying in a latter round, lasting longer with a chance of victory, might be considered a victory. And a road to further success.
-
Finally, because I’m immersed, this game is a standalone. I have one chance to get it right. And I think of the miracle movie. 9 times out of ten the Russians win. But not tonight!

@elche defeats surfer in a slug fest. Congrats to Elche. He picked me off on every error I made. Eventually, the game swung in his favor. A deserved win.
