On the ELO system, we are never going to get a perfect system. Each game has a different handicap, which is unlike chess where every game is the same. Seems impossible to have a system which considers the bid as well the relative strength of every player. I’m not sure a more complex system would promote league play either.

@simon33 I think the small sample size (players only doing 10 games/year) is more of a problem than the bid. In fact the sample size problem is perhaps the biggest issue that limits the effectiveness of any ranking system we could pick.
(Alternative take: is it really a small sample if you do 5-10+ rounds per game? That reduces the roll of luck by a ton, though it doesn’t affect the probability that your opponent might be ranked improperly and/or any variance that comes from playing the same person).
