I am sure this has been discussed at some point.
Option 1: Today side A bids, then side B counters and side A goes again. Sometimes this goes on for many rounds
Option 2: How about side A bid X for allies. Then side B gets to choose side.
What is better, 1 or 2?

Depends. Between equal players I’d say 1, while 2 for players of uneven strength. Or maybe rather 3, which would be more of a discussion/negotiation.

Actually, 2 won’t really work when not more or less evenly matched players. I believe the bidding process is out of play then.
