• While awaiting the begining of 24, I am in the mood for some trivia. It’s also been about three years since we had a forum game, so let’s do it.

Format: Answer the previous question (Honor system, no looking things up!), then ask a question for the next person.

    I’ll start:

Where was Billy the Kid born? State and town.

  • Chicago, Ill.
It’s a guess, because I think he was a big city boy?  Maybe not…

  • Moderator

    your question Jermofoot?

  • Good guess on Billy the Kid! It’s actually not 100% known where he was born. Chicago is the one that most people agree on, but some also say New York. I was hoping for the answer Wheeling, West Virginia, because of the Billy Joel song that mentioned him.

  • Since GG didn’t ask a question, I’ll ask another one. Remember, when you answer ask another question.

On a standard prime time network 1 hour TV show (Think CSI, House, 24, the West Wing, etc), how much of the 1 hour is used for commercials and how much for the show?

  • Oh, ok.  I thought the correct response would elicit a new question.  I guess that’s so.

    Here it is:

How did the use of the middle finger as an insult come to be?  Or…what is the significance of “the bird” as an insult?

  • @Yanny:

38 minutes, and I know that because I tend to watch the entire dvd set of The Simpsons in one sitting when they release a new season.

how is that possible? simpsons is a 30-min show, so it doesnt use a standard hour

  • OH come on just ask war questions… or History…who cares about a middle finger and its primate origins.

  • oh man, capt. bring down is here to ruin everyone’s fun. thanks IL. its trivia. as in trivial. trivial knowledge. good trivia is something that is trivial knowledge, but interesting and random.

  • I think Jermo stumped us :)

I’d like to hear his answer, because as far as I remember no one knows for sure.  I believe there are referencs to fliping the digitus infamis back to roman and even greek times.  Of course there it that story from, I believe the hundred years war, where the brits waved two fingers at the french who had thretened to cut them off.  But even so that was two fingers not just one. :)

D’oh…was thinking Simpsons but meant another show…which I won’t disclose because it’s a guilty pleasure, not to mention an embarassing one.

Well, maybe this isn’t as clear cut as I thought the answer was.  It’s true that it’s not known for sure, but the French/British connection is supposed to be generally accepted source.  Brit longbowmen were fantastic archers, so captured Brits had their middle fingers cut off (by the French) to keep them from using bows ever again.  In defiance, English archers would hold up their middle finger to show the French they were still useable.  And yes, dezrtfish is right, two fingers were also used.  Ok, so, bad question….

    Here’s a better one.

How long was Leningrad under siege during WW2?

When was the first radio audio broadcast and what was it about?

What’s so special about the opossum?

  • He was “Partially Committed?”

Oops… sorry, that was a Jeff Forxworthy reply…

  • The oppossum is the only marsupeal outside of Australia.

Name one of the two monumental battles where Daniel Morgan commanded troops during the American Revolution. For the first battle he was a colonel and the second he was a General.

Battle of Saratoga I believe or if not that in its whereabouts…

    And since were on Revolution:

What Conneticut Town was attacked by Benidict Arnold towards the end of the war and what was the goal of that attack?

  • The other battle was the Battle of Cowpens, my favorite moment in American military history :)

Colonel Benedict Arnold attacked… ooh good one. You got me stumped on a Revolutionary War question GG! This is my time period…

The purpose of Arnold’s attack was to distract the Revolutionaries, cause a little havoc, and hopefully draw George Washington’s army to the other side of the Hudson, where General Clinton’s army in New York would be able to come out and corner him.
