Re-capture India/Calcutta

Does the rules actually say what happens to a major that is bombed out so bad that downgrading will automatically destroy it due to having more damage than what a minor can hold or are we just applying logic here? Because if that’s the case, you might want to welcome the enemy to bomb your factory if you’re going to lose it.

I see both sides. Depends upon who you are playing with. While it wasn’t france….the best victory I ever had was one in which I got diced trying to sink the American fleet at Gilbraltor. Had 98 percent odds of winning. Lost my whole airforce and  the American transports were still alive. Desperate measures followed. I relentlessly attacked Moscow the next 2 turns even though I couldn’t take it…then bought all bombers for the final push with my stragglers getting into range. The bombers were my hail Mary prayer because pressure was building on the western front. Moscow fell…allies conceded due to my income and the fact it was a one front war. Had I not been desperate who knows if I would have slow played Russia to long. I had just enough defense in Europe to turtle and hold. Had the bombers failed it was game over for me…but the fact I had a chance to pull a rabbit out of the hat is what  are the game fun.

A bit houseruley, but you could simply have the UK be a single economy but still two capitals, that way Japan could destroy Calcutta, then after the UK collects again, Germany finishes them off in London. You also need to make Moscow less attractive (G40 was created with the intention of Sea Lion and a more successful Burma campaign to be possible), so additional national objectives are needed for the USSR, with a combination of a means to make China more difficult for Japan, to prevent a Moscow-Rush or Dark Skies Strategy from always taking place.

Another thing is, the allies need simple and also possible to obtain victory conditions, so perhaps this:

Europe Victory: The Allies control 1 original European Axis Victory City; Calcutta and Sydney still under Allies Control
Pacific Victory: Japan controls no originally Pacific Allies Victory Cities; Moscow and London still under Allies Control

Just some thoughts from someone who hasn’t really done the math nor played enough rounds to actually see this tactic through.

Can US really be at war, at their own initiative, with Germany on turn 3 (Combat/Movement phase?) so they can actually move to Gibraltar at all? Or are there any second edition additional rules that I have missed?

And then on down to the tactics on getting a strong fleet supporting units into Normandy or other mainland european regions:

Am I correct in assuming that Germany loosing it’s entire bomber force against, let’s say, a strong naval presence from US/UK equals a lost game for Germany? I am aware that Japan can still grow to be a monster and win the game for the axis anyhow but let’s keep focus on europe for now. Creating a fleet according to Nippon-kokus suggestion (or similar) would create a situation that requires Germany to respond with their bombers. Once there is a strong static fleet that Germany can’t attack without risking it’s entire air force it’s quite easy for the allies to maintain that ratio of units so that it stays safe. And what happens then? The US can land units basically every turn once the shuttle is running. 8 or 10 units are not frightening, I admit. Easily countered by Germany but the way I see it is that Germany from then on are forced to use their bombers plus land units each turn against a landing force. Using german bombers on that front every turn makes them unusable against the russians. I can certainly see where there could be a bit of trouble breaking through russian lines.

The way I see it, if the US can do this, why would Dark Skies really matter? Would buying 20 Infantry and 10 Tanks be any different? Germany still couldn’t kill the Allied fleet, would still have to divert forces from Russia, would still face the Allies landing every turn…

…and on top of it, It’d be harder for Germany to counter attack.

Seems like Dark Skies is still an optimal strategy against a US invasion.

Has war been declared on the states? If not you are not allowed to leave the coastal seazones of the US. You are allowed to do a longe range patrol into seazone 102.

I’ve just realised this last night. MAde a couple of novice errors as still getting up to speed on the rules as first game on 1940.

I was thinking and what about this. This will be better to do if London falls due to Sealion. Anyways here’s my idea. Have the US navy guard the ANZAC’s while they build transports and units (US should still be building mainly in the east though.) The British should send most of their units to Persia, and be building mech infantry to run up to Shan State. Try to make sure the US navy secures the water near Southeast Asia so Japan doesn’t start reinforcing that area with transports. Then after the Japanese attack send some British units west to help against Italy (assuming these will be your last reinforcements for a little bit if the income is gone,) and slow down and weaken the Japanese with the rest (the US should reinforce this water area now.) Once Japan captures India have an Australian force hit of transports and units that should be collecting Dutch islands if possible as well, but still being guarded by the US navy. Then unload and start taking these British territories for themselves and then unload a few dudes to West India, but leave Calcutta alone. This way if ANZAC is getting all the Indonesian islands they will be making an income of 42 IPCS (10 in ANZAC territories, 15 in Indonesia, 7 from other British territories, and 10 from NO’S.) This way ANZAC can start building nice navies to the US can pay more attention to Germany and Italy (hophelly ANZAC can defend it’s territories quick enough though
