I am always fearful of the 40% attack on my navies…I try to keep everything over the top secure, perhaps a flaw in my strategy?

Good point. Would have been too much there to attack. But without that turnaround mid-battle I would have got sucked into a bad deal so your loss would have been partially mitigated
