Have you considered dual booting your MacBook? That is what I’ve done - although I’m a bit of Unix man. Lubuntu 16.04 runs pretty good on my Core 2 Duo 3GB Mac in a 10GB partition. You don’t really need that much RAM BTW.

If you still have your recovery partition, you should be able to boot into that to partition your mac drive. Hold down alt on boot. Otherwise you might need the Mac CD. Not sure if you can resize a mac partition with Linux.
Yes, linux is free. I think I burnt lubuntu onto DVD but I’m pretty sure you can get it to work on a USB stick with some more fiddling. If your Mac has at least 2GB of ram/25GB of disk space and you aren’t that tech savvy, I’d recommend the full Ubuntu (32bit given the age of your Macbook) rather than the lightweight version.
