You could have rolled the first round of the subs.
If the subs hit once or twice in the first round, lose DDs. If the DDs hit, lose planes starting with the tac. Unless the subs have all missed.
This is actually a bug in Triple-A. When I have a DD I should be able to see all the dice before needing to select casualties because the surprise strike is nullified and the subs then first with all the other units.
