Going to say that the sub should have been taken as a casualty in SZ91. The fleet was defending 4 TTs so even a small chance is more worthwhile than keeping a sub. I would say that I would keep a fighter in spite of the lack of a CV - I still would even if it would sink which in this case it would not.

So let’s look at this for a moment.
I hit 4 in the 1st round with 1 SS, 1 BMB, 1 TAC, 1 FTR.
Casualties for US: 1 CV (2), 1 DD, CR. I couldn’t hit your SS because I don’t have a DD.
You hit 4 in your first round: 1 DD, 1 CV, 2 FTR.
So, I choose CV, SS, and CR as casualties. I submerged your SS because it couldn’t take part in the rest of the battle anyway since I had no ability to hit it and had no surface fleet left.
Thus, the result should stay as it was.

Each attacking submarine conducting a Surprise Strike rolls one
die. Attacking submarines that roll a “2” or less score a hit. After
the attacking player has rolled for all attacking submarines, the
defender chooses 1 sea unit (submarines can’t hit air units) for
each hit scored and moves it behind the casualty strip. (Note:
undamaged capital ships that are hit only once are not removed.)
And later:
Note: In both cases, attacking or defending, transports can be
chosen as casualties only if there are no other eligible units.
Submerged submarines can’t be chosen as casualties since they
have been removed from the battle.
So when it says “sea units” it is clearly not referring to surface warships

There’s no way I would’ve chosen to lose your CR rather than your SS unless it didn’t give me the option to. I’m sure you would’ve wanted the extra punch. If it proves there was an error that would leave you a CR and 2 FTrs against my FTR Tac and BMB which means you would roll an extra die in the last battle at 3.

Now, for the moves, you’re also right since you asked me t take the CV as first hit and I did, then that set us along the path of the SS not being relevant to the battle after round 1 since my cruiser didn’t hit.
can’t see many ways to adjust this, but open to suggestions.
