I would say that I would keep a fighter in spite of the lack of a CV - I still would even if it would sink which in this case it would not.

So let’s look at this for a moment.
I hit 4 in the 1st round with 1 SS, 1 BMB, 1 TAC, 1 FTR.
Casualties for US: 1 CV (2), 1 DD, CR. I couldn’t hit your SS because I don’t have a DD.
You hit 4 in your first round: 1 DD, 1 CV, 2 FTR.
So, I choose CV, SS, and CR as casualties. I submerged your SS because it couldn’t take part in the rest of the battle anyway since I had no ability to hit it and had no surface fleet left.
Thus, the result should stay as it was.

you did keep a FTR - 2 in fact - as defenders. Against my 1 Bomber, 1 Tac and 1 FTR. The sub was out of the battle after round 1 since I had no Surface fleet left to attack it.
