PS I had US friends to stay who skipped through the TV channels and found a game of cricket. “Hey - let’s watch that!” they cried. “How long does a game last?” When I told them 5 days they lost interest immediately!

They realised quite early that it was boring, PP. I only followed it as a child, as there was nothing else on over the Summer Hols. I even watched Wimbledon! Thank God I discovered A&A at university.
My best friend also plays. Have watched him a few times.

Each 5 day test can swing backwards and forwards over the course of the game, generating a crescendo of “edge of your seat” excitement. Each 5 test series can build on that uncertainty to a climax of exhilaration.
Unfortunately not all games and series are like that. You know when it’s not happening when the commentators start discussing the pigeons landing in the outfield, or the camera switches to an elderly gent asleep in his seat ….
But it can be. This Ashes series has been something of a roller-coaster. Sometimes anticipation can enhance gratification more than immediacy does. And you can’t get much more anticipation than a 5 day game.
Anyone convinced? :-)
