The small Cavalry battle of Tom’s Brook was fought today in 1864 in Shenandoah County.
Sheridan, commanding 30000 men in the Valley, wanted to destroy the Southern cavalry and gave Albert Torbert, the commander of his the DivisionCavalry, the job. He had two Divisions of 6300 troopers, including George Custer’s Division. Facing him, Tom Rosser of Virginia only had 3500. Many of the Southern mounts were also of poor quality.
The Southern force was routed, losing 11 guns and 300 men captured. The Southern cavalry retreated so quickly that the battle was also called The Woodstock Races.
Happy Birthday Guerilla Guy.
