It no doubt was the German fighter. You are right about the Italians. They’re all tough in the beginning, but when it matters they fail you, hard.

What else is incredible, is that the new UK bomber from South Africa was only there to take pictures. It contributed nothing

I could get used to allied non entity bombers. :-D
First the US one against Japan and then the Brit one against Italy/Germany.
Well, at least you don’t have a Brit fleet in the Indian ocean and you didn’t catch any vulnerabilities I might’ve have missed with the Japanese. ie, I didn’t lose half my Japanese fleet as I was half expecting you to somehow defeat it in detail because I missed a 1-2 punch or something obvious. That cruiser/transport was the most at risk and I was hoping that a) you wouldn’t attack it and go after the other defenseless transports or b) the cruiser had enough firepower on it’s lonesome to at least take something with it or survive.
