Preview 4: Movement and Combat

The Turkish Straits are entirely contained within the territory of Constantinople, so moving from Constantinople to Bulgaria does not require crossing the straits. As the straits are contained within a single territory and not at a border between territories, transports are never needed to cross them. It doesn’t matter what the odds are. Fighters may attack a hostile territory as long as at least one infantry also attacks (all of the units end their move in the same territory, so the infantry satisfies the fighters’ land unit requirement). Of course, if there is only one infantry, all of the fighters will have to be taken as casualties before it can be taken (see page 19 of the rulebook).

Has anyone else tried a French tactic of (F1) A. Taking Spanish Morocco, B. Mobilizing Portugal and consolidating the transport fleet; (F2) Borrowing the mobilized Portuguese to swing down to SZ 23/ Togoland with a significant force; (F3) Move French transports back towards Canada and using the French African Task Force to Gain IPCs for France and to eliminate the Germans in Africa?

So I was thinking, instead of mandating naval battles only go one round, why not just give both parties a retreat option (TBD). In many cases this would self restrict naval battles to one round.

Yes, but when you retreat, the other is not allowed to chase you. In real naval battles it is common to chase each other, but in a game that kind of behavior violates the turn order.

I think time is an issue. A game turn is considered to be like 6 months, while a real life naval battle usually took less than a day. On top of that, our ships seems to be stuck in their little seazone. In the real world a ship could easily sail around the world in 6 months, as is the length of a game turn. Now imagine that in a game, a ship with unlimited movement.

I think in order to make a game that behave as close to the real world as possible, we must analyze every naval battles from 1904 to 1945, and then we will see that WiF is the game that come close, and that Axis and Allies has a long way to go.

Right. The only problem was the setups and major factory ( glitch) in Norway change, as well as minor tweeks. Kreighund wrote the rules as good as possible and the setup is not his doing.

Same as before except:

All new ground units are placed in the capital.

All new ships are placed in tts with a naval base.

UK can place some units in India (not ships), but we don’t know if there’s a limit to this.

There is no production in Africa, which is why some think its pretty pointless having Africa in the game at all.

My suggested house rule is that any power holding African tt can build a limited number of “Askaris” there on a turn; basically native infantry who must be accompanied at all times by “regular” troops. They cost 2 and fight at -1 on attack and defence (can still be boosted by artillery).
Without them, Africa will have fewer units than tts and see very little action.

Weren’t there convoy boxes all over the North Atlantic?

There were “Convoy territories” for lack of a better term that could be denied by German Subs that went through them.

No, the tanks are fine.

Its the fighters and artillery that are too small.

We don’t know what happens when capitals are captured. I would assume they can still build there when contested, even though they’ll collect no money for the capital itself.

On past rules we can assume that all money is captured, the country cannot build new units or collect money, but can be liberated by its allies.
