Axis and Allies 1914 FAQ/Question and Answer Thread

I’ve created a separate thread for my work on the OOB 1914 map. Please go here to discuss it in more detail.

Adding write-up of procedure we use…
Divided into 2 parts, territory is either Original or Non-Original.

PROCEDURE:

The Revolution can occur at the end of any Russian turn starting with turn 4.
At that time an Armistice is offered FROM the new Soviet Russia power TO the Central Powers.  
The offer is NOT optional and is a ONE time offer, that is accepted or rejected.  
IF ACCEPTED…

No further battle against Russian units is permitted.  Travel into territories with ONLY Russian units is forbidden.

Non-Original Russian Territories and Sea Zones (including Serbia and Romania)
1.  Remove all Russian units.
2.  Remove all Russian sea units.
3.  Remove all Russian control tokens, plus, as applies after step 1, if territory is…
a.  Contested…
    No further action.
b.  Other AP or CP powers only…
    Captured territories goes to remaining power, or if multiple, their choice.
    Original territories, control goes to original power. Exception: If original AP
               power’s capital is captured, then control goes to other AP power (if any).
       c.  No units of any power…
            Original territories, control goes to original power.
            All other territories are uncontrolled.

Original Russian Territories
1.  Remove all Russian units, except leave 1 infantry unit where units exist.
2.  Establish territory control…
    a.  Controlled by a CP power…
         The territory remains in that CP power’s control.  The CP power will continue
 to collect IPC income.  Treat these same as any other neutral territory.  These
          can never become Russian territories again.
    b.  Contested, but only with non-Russian powers…
         1.  Add 1 Russian infantry unit.
         2.  Follow step c.
    c.  Contested…
         Territory remains contested for remainder of game.  However the CP player
  is allowed movement through the territory if it maintains a garrison.  AP players
  cannot enter these territories. Plus see step e. ** If CP leaves, it cannot re-enter.**
    d.  Occupied with other AP power(s) only…
         1.  Add 1 Russian infantry unit.
         2.  Follow step e.          
    e.  Shared with other AP power(s) (with or without CP powers)…
         AP player must leave Russia by end of their next move once the revolution
 has occurred or they will be removed from the board.  No battle is allowed in
these territories.  Contested movement restriction (pg 15) does not apply.
    f.  Controlled by Russians only…
        1.  Add 1 Russian infantry in none exists.  Entry by AP/CP powers is forbidden.

Gentalmen thank you for your input I appreciate that and I’m going to go back and look through the rule book and see what it says but your obviously right….

My wargame buddies. And I really. Like this game…

protevangelium makes some great points about how lopsided the sea’s were, and sub warfare being the best option for the CP in the war. Subs are a bit lacking in this edition as well as others IMO (nearly impossible to raid convoys, or inflict econ damage). The Austrians, and Turks were very limited in their abilities. The Germans did have a more modern surface fleet (tried to enter a naval arms race before the war), but failed in comparison to the Brits. In this game the Germans can get temporary control of the North Sea early though and add to their fleet. Once the rest of French Fleet comes up the UK still doesn’t need to build much to protect allied transports OOB (two French BB’s is a nice way to start for the allies rebuild). If the allies want to knock the German fleet out, then it could get expensive, but do they need to, or just set-up a multi national defense that the Germans can’t touch to keep allied transports afloat. Then there is always the 1-2 punch if the allies want to go aggressive. I still believe the problem lies with the French fleet (and the abilities of the sub to a point).

When we play we always reduce the Atlantic French Fleet to just a cruiser (swap BB for cruiser and remove the transport). We have done this even before Larry introduced it in the Tourney rules. It does help for game play, and better reflects what the French had in the Atlantic. The French Atlantic fleet was more of a support to the Brits (not nearly equal). Before the war the French naval focus was in the Med not knowing the intentions of the Italians (fearing an Italian attack which the game doesn’t reflect).

It would have been nice for the sub to have a larger roll in this edition having more raiding ability or sz’s to attack econ. Should destroyers be introduced so subs have a better survival rate? Maybe the naval set-up cost should be tweaked. BB’s at 12 IPCs is too cost effective IMO (should they be 15 IPCs?), no one buys cruisers. Just thinking out load……don’t read to much into it. WB

Shame the contract stops him from saying a lot.

I don’t agree with the two space rule change for land units. Land units in World War 1 were not mobile and if you are looking for a game with full mobility the original axis & allies WOII games are a much better choice.

However I do see the potential of limiting the capacity of producing units in India to 5. Playing UK is much harder as you have to keep producing units in India to keep the Ottomans away and also have to build a navy in the west to threat the Germans. The UK simply lacks the IPC to help the Russians in this scenario since a decisive victory against either the Ottomans in the East or against the German navy in the west is very hard to accomplish. In the two games we have played with this rule Russia Revolution has occurred.

This map (in larger size than first edition !!) would be my favourite map for second Edition. (of course it would be in english  :wink:

All changes:

2 more tts for Russia: St.Petersburg and Kaukasus ( Starting Set Up for both were the additional 3 Inf from the Tournement Rules)

1 more tt for Turkey: Armenia (Prevents Russian Units from taking Bagdad in Round 1)

Germany looking like Germany in 1914 not in 1919. Bulgaria reaches the coast/Finland no more.

Switzerland with its formidable army and difficult mountaineous region worth 3 IPC.

4 more USW-Zones (historical)

Mexico as Minor Power to simulate the Zimmermann-Note, some Zones for the US.

Konstantinopel is handled like Suez Canal along with one more SZ in the Med.

In Africa some colonies allow to place 1 Inf. when mobilzing your troops (brown K). (Mexico also)

I kept the rest from original game although there were some things I still don´t agree with (you can check out some of my maps in the 1914 map tweaks in the House Rules)  but for the simplicity of the game I can live with it.

My wish would be that it is forbidden for AH in the first turn to attack Italy or Romania because these two were Central Powers when AH declared war against Serbia in 1914.
