I have not the faintest idea on how the US should be handled properly. Is there a hidden DOW button somewhere. Or is it simply not more than what I do anyway…

The US is supposed to capture the “US declares war” territory, and that gives them a 10 ipc factory right next to Europe. So, the US runs the gauntlet of the Atlantic once then their supply lines are shortened for the rest of the war, increasing the impact of their entering the war.
