I didn’t even see I had a sub there until the combat phase started. Rather than restart my turn and redo all of my combat moves so that I could move him out of there, in the interests of time I just edited him out and into the Iceland seazone.

Every unit on the board can choose to move out of naval combat on their combat move; it’s not a sub ability that can be cancelled by the presence of a destroyer (if it was 3 battleships and 10 transports, they could do the same thing). In any case, you can go chase him down with a destroyer and kill him even easier on defense than if the sub attacked.

The only times you see this used is if a sub submerged in defense on an opponent’s previous turn, if somebody has just declared war, or if somebody built on top of naval.

In previous versions of the game, you couldn’t build naval in a contested seazone. You can, now. But on the attacker’s own turn, they get to move to avoid combat in their combat phase.

Yeah, I can’t say I’ve ever done that before. The second round wasn’t part of the plan. But I could save 48 IPC of Italy’s units by spending 37 IPC of German production and by landing planes that weren’t needed anywhere else. Mitigates that debacle on I1 just a tiny bit.

I was wondering that myself this turn. Now that you ask, here’s what I think it was for. On J1 he was a blocker preventing the BB from using the Naval Base on Malaya to hit the undefended transports off Formosa. Normally I think I leave him on the Carolines so on the turn I DOW, I have a blocker that can reach 38 different seazones.

After J1? I was confused as to what he was doing there so I just left him there.  :lol:

I’d have to say this is not my normal playing style. But it’s been a couple months since I’ve played as the Axis, so I’m just piecing together some things done against me that I wanted to try.

Once the dice start rolling, every plan is a hybrid anyway.

FWIW, I feel like on C1, Yunnan is worth the zero IPC trade (-10 IPC fighter +3 IPC infantry +1 IPC territory +6 IPC bonus) and the loss of the irreplaceable Flying Tigers to hold for a turn. Once the Japanese airforce lands there, it’s gone until Japan decides it doesn’t want it anymore. Of course, it’s a moot point if another infantry comes along, too. China and Africa are the two places that you need overkill or risk getting diced because of the unit scarcity.

His people aren’t going to like that… If he keeps that up, he’s gonna find himself stuck on a tiny island when this is all over…

It’s weird that I didn’t get any of those die rolls. I’m not worried because it’s just a friendly game. Maybe it was run in local mode instead of PBEM? If it was a league game, you’d want to make sure that got rerun. But zero worries here  :-)
