Carrier Mobilization

@aequitas-et-veritas @ssgen I should have flagged all of the old crew as well. Mobility means less on the smaller maps (AA50 even). Carrier manipulation is THE hallmark of G42/tournament play and all G40 variants. In my current game (G42/7 turns/221) against the relentless and indomitable MAPHEAD dave I have 5 Japanese carriers just to port all my planes around.

That sounds like the way i understand the rules. Moving to an adjacent sea zone then moving to a land territory in that sea zone is 2 moves. Therefore not allowed.

Yes, he is not forced to fight your new reinforcements. He can opt but doesn’t have to. I think this is the only situation where units can (must) move during the CM without triggering a combat.

Ofc, those units cannot move again during the NCM…

To be fair, this is why you never ever ever send carriers anywhere without a destroyer. The same problem happens if you send a carrier plus fighters to attack submarines. Since the carrier doesn’t roll attack dice and the fighters can’t hit the submarines, you just have infinite rounds of combat until the subs either sink the carrier or the units retreat.

This is also why it is recommend that when playing the pacific side as either Japan or the US, you purchase at least one sub for every carrier that the other side purchases.

You should also never tip your carriers on defense if you have no where for your planes to land, since the attacker will almost always retreat and watch your planes crash into the ocean for free.

Carrier planes are always defending in the air, no matter what type of units are attacking.

The USS Lexington took two torpedo hits and 3 bombs during the Battle of the Coral Sea and continued flight operations until the battle was over.  Some explosions later sunk it, but that’s pretty impressive.  That was before they started putting torpedo hulls on the carriers.

The USS Yorktown dodged 8 torpedos in that battle.  Got all busted up with bombs and scrambled back for the defense of Midway after a few days worth of repairs.

If they were so easy to kill why didn’t they just kill them before they did so much damage to the Japanese fleet?  When the reality is every ship and plane is pretty much focused on taking out said carriers.

They are two hit pieces for sure.

I also like Gargantua’s idea of having both carrier types available to purchase.  You could consider one an escourt carrier and the other the main battle carrier.  I am guessing Imperious Leader can tell us what their abreviations should be (CV, CVE, ABCD, etc.).

The only way that a plane can be stuck on a carrier is if it goes into battle as cargo on an ally’s carrier (attacking only) and the carrier becomes damaged in the battle.

Planes always being in the air is realistic because planes fly patrols all the time, looking for the enemy.

The bummer is a damaged carrier can’t land planes.
