2013 - AAG 40 League

How strict are people here when it comes to slow play? Is it considered rude to post “bump” right when the 72 hour mark has been passed? One of my opponents had his last post done 83 hours ago, and I am unsure if I am a cocky douchebag if I give the bump warning now.

Right.  Some people will have smoke coming out of their ears if they get bumped, but the rule is there for a reason.  If you’re concerned, try sending them a PM first.

It takes 3 bumps plus one more 72 hour delay to lose a game, so technically 1 bump doesn’t hurt anything and neither does 3, as long as there is no 72 hour delay after that.
Anyone starting a league game has agreed to the bump rules, knowingly or not, and you are entitled to use them.  But like Jenn said, use discretion and sportsmanship.

As an example, I currently am giving a break to JapanDOWturn1fan (laptop broken) and Gargantua (new to the league), two games I am enduring long delays on.

That said, I assure you that Jenn and I will enforce the bump rules and 72 hour rules to the minute, barring extenuating circumstances (like a post or a PM pleading for more time, with a good reason) or a really good explanation from the bumpee.

This is because if the rule is not enforced, it may as well not even be there.
If I were you and this is an unexplained 72 hour absence, I would bump.  If your opponent is upset, you point him to the league rules on page 1 of this thread, and you remind him that it takes (effectively) FOUR bumps to claim a win, etc etc.

Good.  You shouldn’t.  That’s what the rule’s there for.  :-)

FYI if the playoffs started now or very soon, these are (APPROXIMATELY) who would probably be in them:

RGP44, 7-0, 1.000, #2
Alexgreat, 9-0, 1.000, #7
Allweneedislove, 19-2, .905, #1
Zhukov, 8-1, .889, #4
Gamerman01, 21-3, .875, #3
Arathorn, 6-2, .750, #13
Hobo, 11-4, .733, #9
Ziggurat, 16-6, .727, #6

Nobody can argue this is a good group for the playoffs.
However, by rankings, these players would be excluded:
#5 Hank13 (10-4, .714)
#8 Cow (10-4, .714)

Note that these players could easily qualify by the end of the year by win% (current rules) but yes if they really wanted to be in the playoffs then they will pick weaker opponents.

Hank and Cow are ranked #5 and #8 using my system but are not in the top 8 by win % because they play tougher competition.
Half of Cow’s games were played vs. tier 1.  Only 3 were below tier 2.
Half of Hank’s games were played vs. tier 1, with very few against below tier 2.

So there’s the difference between straight win % and a strength of schedule calculation such as my own.
I think having 3 tournament/playoff at the end of the year that excludes no one but the tier 4’s (I’ll call them apprentices) would alleviate the concerns about the playoff qualification/determination, and include everyone who wants, in the fun.
Winner of the tier 1 playoff is crowned winner of the league for the year.

Just wanted to remind Jenn to include the games (I think 4 total) that are legitimate League wins, but that were not counted in Gamerman’s rankings.

Just wondering when the 2014 season starts - is it Jan 1, or Oct sometime?

7a - The Regular Season for each league will start on 2 Nov. 2012 and end on 1 Nov. 2012 and the standings will then be posted.  Games must be completed prior to this date in order to be counted for the 2012 season.

7b - Any games in progress that are completed after this date will be eligible to count for the next league (2013) assuming league rules remain the same or are similar.

7c - 2013 Playoffs begin Nov 2nd

Although I think it would be a good idea to make next year a 14 month year so that it ends 12/31/14, and then ever after it can go with the calendar year, for simplicity.
We will have at least 3 playoffs of 8 people each starting in November, so there won’t be as many regular season games being played in November/December anyway.
What do you think about phasing out the fiscal year, Jenn?  Fix it by having a 14 month year once?  I don’t know how many times people have had to ask when the league year starts and ends.  A lot of confusion could be averted with a 1/1 - 12/31 year

Wouldn’t that make the playoffs start in 2015 for the 2014 season?

I like to see the playoffs attempt to end in the same year as the season.  Personally, I’d run the regular season to end in Sept, to give an extra month for the playoff brackets.

in fact, i think it should not be a both players agree thing, i think it should be mandatory.  give me one reason why it shouldn’t be!

Sign up for the playoffs here, even if it currently looks like you will be in the top 8.  In case you don’t end up in the top 8, you will be signed up then.

Only 1 requirement - 4 completed league games by 11/1/13.

We currently have enough for 2 additional playoffs, for a total of 3.  If we have enough signups there will be a 4th bracket.

You are signing up for 1-3 games.  No bracket will take more than 3 games to win.

There really is no connection that I can see. What is “our” purpose, then? The only thing that makes sense to take across to 2014 is “ranking / seeding”.
As a non-native speaker, I might not understand “strenght of schedule” correctly.

And why mandatory, Bold? Give me one reason why it should carry over, other than that you just want it to.

As for the calendar year, I am all for it.
