How strict are people here when it comes to slow play? Is it considered rude to post “bump” right when the 72 hour mark has been passed? One of my opponents had his last post done 83 hours ago, and I am unsure if I am a cocky douchebag if I give the bump warning now.

It’s up to the individual players.
I feel it is good sportsmanship to allow extra time if forewarned of a situation. I will also hear extenuating circumstances like “I dropped my computer off to be serviced and the service department did not give it back for 14 days.” Right now is back to school time so the service departments are slammed and not everyone knows how to fix a computer. (Surprised some people know how to turn on a computer, to be perfectly frank with you!)
If you want to post a bump at 83 hours, go for it. 72 is the minimum. If you want to wait for 96 hours you can. I wouldn’t see it as a jerk move if a bump was posted at 72 hours, 1 minute against me (unless of course I said ‘hey, I’ll be out for the next 4 days, you okay with that?’ and they said ‘yes’)

Right. Some people will have smoke coming out of their ears if they get bumped, but the rule is there for a reason. If you’re concerned, try sending them a PM first.
It takes 3 bumps plus one more 72 hour delay to lose a game, so technically 1 bump doesn’t hurt anything and neither does 3, as long as there is no 72 hour delay after that.
Anyone starting a league game has agreed to the bump rules, knowingly or not, and you are entitled to use them. But like Jenn said, use discretion and sportsmanship.As an example, I currently am giving a break to JapanDOWturn1fan (laptop broken) and Gargantua (new to the league), two games I am enduring long delays on.

That said, I assure you that Jenn and I will enforce the bump rules and 72 hour rules to the minute, barring extenuating circumstances (like a post or a PM pleading for more time, with a good reason) or a really good explanation from the bumpee.
This is because if the rule is not enforced, it may as well not even be there.
If I were you and this is an unexplained 72 hour absence, I would bump. If your opponent is upset, you point him to the league rules on page 1 of this thread, and you remind him that it takes (effectively) FOUR bumps to claim a win, etc etc. -

FYI if the playoffs started now or very soon, these are (APPROXIMATELY) who would probably be in them:

Ziggurat, 16-6, .727, #6Nobody can argue this is a good group for the playoffs.
However, by rankings, these players would be excluded:
#5 Hank13 (10-4, .714)
#8 Cow (10-4, .714)Note that these players could easily qualify by the end of the year by win% (current rules) but yes if they really wanted to be in the playoffs then they will pick weaker opponents.
Hank and Cow are ranked #5 and #8 using my system but are not in the top 8 by win % because they play tougher competition.
Half of Cow’s games were played vs. tier 1. Only 3 were below tier 2.
Half of Hank’s games were played vs. tier 1, with very few against below tier 2.So there’s the difference between straight win % and a strength of schedule calculation such as my own.
I think having 3 tournament/playoff at the end of the year that excludes no one but the tier 4’s (I’ll call them apprentices) would alleviate the concerns about the playoff qualification/determination, and include everyone who wants, in the fun.

7a - The Regular Season for each league will start on 2 Nov. 2012 and end on 1 Nov. 2012 and the standings will then be posted. Games must be completed prior to this date in order to be counted for the 2012 season.
7b - Any games in progress that are completed after this date will be eligible to count for the next league (2013) assuming league rules remain the same or are similar.

I like to see the playoffs attempt to end in the same year as the season. Personally, I’d run the regular season to end in Sept, to give an extra month for the playoff brackets.

Sign up for the playoffs here, even if it currently looks like you will be in the top 8. In case you don’t end up in the top 8, you will be signed up then.
Only 1 requirement - 4 completed league games by 11/1/13.
We currently have enough for 2 additional playoffs, for a total of 3. If we have enough signups there will be a 4th bracket.
I don’t have a reason against playoff games also counting for 2014 league other than it feels weird because it is never done in any sport at any level that I am aware of. However, it does seem to make sense for our purposes. After all, the rankings take into account strength of schedule…. so as long as next year’s playoff qualification is not determined by win % but by PPG…
