On both sides of the map, you put often placed medium and large stacks of infantry in vulnerable positions.  I don’t know if you use an odds calculator, but the odds were against you in Belarus for example.  If you need/want, here’s a good odds calculator: http://www.dskelly.com/misc/aa/aasim.html (just make sure to set it to 1940 A3)

In many situations (especially as the Allies), it’s better to pull back then to stand your ground because the Axis have so much air power early on.

Russia weakened itself by trying to be aggressive in the North (I assumed you were aiming for Finland/Norway).  Unless Germany goes Sea Lion or is inexperienced, it’s unlikely you can get away with that.  Russia couldn’t afford to lose all those units which got stuck in Karelia/Vyborg.

Russia also needs all those Far East troops for defense.  It’s usually best to march them strait home to Moscow (Sea Lion, again, could be an exception). You hurt an already weakened Japan by sending Russians to China, but in the long run, it wasn’t their best use in this game.

    To illustrate the vulnerable stacks:

    Japan 2
    Battle in Yunnan
    Japanese attack with 2 artilleries, 1 bomber, 6 fighters, 2 infantry, 1 mech_infantry and 5 tactical_bombers
    Chinese defend with 12 infantry

The most likely outcome would be:
Japan loses 2 inf, 1 mech, 2 art [18 IPC value]
China loses 12 inf [36 IPC value]

Obviously, it didn’t work out like that in our game (Japan lost 4 planes instead of zero), but most of the time China will lose significantly more value than Japan will.  China would have been wiser to leave as few men as possible on Yunnan.
