XDAP 01 Team Imhotep (Axis) vs The Headless Neds (Allies)

  • TripleA

Besides most live dice games are crazy, because everyone is drunk and screaming random insults at each other, and we got loud music of random stuff like this:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNsAPwxl_Tk

See TIP makes a great point about life, big stuff always poppin and little stuff always be stoppin, you got to do it like a ball player and do it death.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JcPtxELXmDU

    ball till you fall

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=daLpNk6QOHw

and wild out like a Samoan.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPsMR7HvuZM

Then drop some random 90s trance or euro beats.

or just listen to modern day trance off of www.di.fm I really like the Ali and Fila show live from Cairo Egypt. Egyptian moosic is really good these days, the Netherlands is awesome too. America sucks, it sucks USA is always a country in these WWII games.

I understand like PBF is kind of boring because you are not drunk enough, but that is why I am an alcoholic and a pot head. I just do what the moosic tells me to do.

You just got to pick one big battle as the allies to change the whole game one crazy russian attack or USA in the pacific or atlantic move.

To be honest I think the allies are not that far behind, because japan does not look good in the pacific.

  • I respectfully disagree - all things being equal, Cow, we were looking at a long slow bloody death march, which quite frankly sucks. I have better things to do with my time than watch myself die a grisly death.

The better team won the game, and the pain ended.

I’ve been playing A&A since it originally came out, waaaay back in the day, and I’ve never seen a worse opening for a nation than UK’s opener. It was single-handedly brutal. 4 units lost against 0 in Ethiopia? Hello? 2 extra air units lost vs. the Italian fleet? Destroyer vs sub results in German sub winning, then hitting the UK for 3 IPCs lost? Then on Germany’s next turn… Strat bombing resulting in 15 IPCs out of a possible 16 damage on Britain’s IC? 6 out of 6 on the airbase?

For Sealion, 10 AA shots for UK resulted in 1 hit? Germany won with an extra 3-4 units at the very least (all premium pieces - artillery and armor)? See a trend?

Our last hope - Russia - lost a total of 46 IPCs worth of extra units and territories in a single battle… really? And not only that, the momentum shift was unbelievable… Russian territories would have been attacked that shouldn’t have been… Russia down 2 aircraft out of 3…and you can’t measure that just in IPCs, as Russia needs to use those fighters every single round. Could we have stacked in E Poland the round before? Absolutely. It was a strong consideration. But an opportunistic German player (our opponent’s MO, who would have done it based on other aggressive moves) would have absolutely smashed Russia’s forces, used the transports to back it up repeatedly, and Russia would have been done in 4 more turns. I sure would have. Hindsight is easy - in the situation we found ourselves in, a Russia able to retaliate into Romania and blunt the German offensive (by odds no aircraft lost and taken with an armor), stack in E Poland for the turn after retaliation (with more mobile units backing it up), and harassing Germany’s front while allowing the US to get in the war seemed our best possible option.

So! We were mortally wounded. Some of the issue was a series of mistakes we at Team Headless Neds made, and some of it was dice. Could we have pulled it out? Ummm… sure, I guess. Maybe a 3% chance. I don’t know your situation, Cow, but I have a family and a stressful job. I can’t come home and carve out a 1/2 hour and pour my energy into a game that is clearly over. I envy your situation that you can.

I also disagree that this is a dice game. Risk is a dice game. This is a strategy game with dice, not a dice game with strategy. That’s a critical difference. If you can’t depend on odds, you can’t depend on anything. Personally I go into every battle based on math, not rolling craps. If I wanted to play a dice game, I’d go chuck some dice in the parking lot with some friends. In A&A, I dislike big swings that go my way just as much as big swings that go against me. In every game, I root for even dice, and a fair shot… then, we get to see the better strategies win out.

You make a fair point that a single big battle somewhere could in theory shift things around - but that’s like being down in a basketball game by 14 points with a minute and a half left and saying “if we just get some turnovers, and make 3’s each time down the floor, and…” It’s just not realistic, and happens once every 15 years in the NBA. If I were 16 again and had nothing better to do hell yeah I’d keep going! But I have to mow the front lawn and get my daughter to sleep at a decent time.

All of that having been said - go Team Imhotep! They won fair and square, played a more solid game, and I’ll root for them until we play them again in the tournament, for the championship  :-D  They were classy and honorable opponents.

I confirm : that was the plan !

Thanks for saying this. I so wish we meet again in that tournament like you said !

I could easily win this game with allies. J3 looks so bad, usa does not have to invest a single ipc in the pacific and can liberate london no problem.

the problem is russia has too many men in nov and not enough in position to go for his objectives. Germany devoted all that cheddar to uk and russia got nothing on him, you are just rolling over.

Let me tell you how russia ought to play, R1 = germany bought naval = grab mech for nov and ukraine. nov only needs 8 guys to defend it you got karelia and that other spot which has to move to nov and you place 3 and you got 3 air units. all available units move in range of east poland.

Then when G2 comes he bought already, so you can calc your odds of holding london and compare to the odds of holding east poland, if the odds of holding east poland is better than london, the answer is simple you move up. No guts no glory.

As it stands, usa does not have to invest a dime into the pacific for awhile. russia takes manchuria and korea right. Can japan take 5 islands, malaya, and manchuria with 3 transports? No, he can’t. you will have a pacific income advantage for awhile, so if losing london really bothers you, you can just liberate it with 3-4 rounds of full atlantic buys.

You don’t have to worry about the pacific victory for awhile.  Japan has very limited options for j3, you just have to take advantage of his bad setup.

  • TripleA

Also losing russia is not game over especially if japan had to DOW on round 3. japs lose out on so much cheddar, so risking russia not a bad play at all. If KJF and manage to keep india alive India will be your russia walling off egypt… and if not if you shut japan down in time, you can buy full atlantic when russia falls and germany will be hard pressed to take london or egypt being by himself in the game.

You guys will always lose as allies no matter what the axis do, because you limit your options so hard and roll over at the first sign of defeat. The pacific is bad for axis and europe is good for axis… you just have to capitalize on it and you will do good.

  • TripleA

The pacific is far more important in this version of axis and allies than an any other versions, it is actually on par with europe. Larry Harris did a very good job as far as forcing pacific upon us goes.

  • TripleA

Larry Harris made the pacific equally important as the atlantic, because he was tired of seeing an empty pacific and the allies rushing berlin while japan rushes moscow… he did a good job making the pacific matter like it did in the real war. Japan blew up in the real war, Europe failed the battle of Britian, instead it is the opposite in this board game yet allies still look good, which shows good game balance as far as how much each half of the board matters goes.

  • TripleA

OK nevermind, ruskies weren’t in amur on round 2. also you should have blocked japan’s transports with dds. You have to move up in this game and play the objectives. East poland is critical in countering sea lion always buy mech when facing g1 naval purchases.

Just be more aggressive next game and you will get more awpertunities.

  • @Cow:

Let me tell you how russia ought to play,

Cow, my friend, please don’t take offense at this, but Stalingradski does not need you to tell him how to play Russia.

This one is really, and by far, my favorite !! Lol

  • Agreed Axisplaya - with Germany I feel I can hold off the Allied fleet without having London, let alone when destroying the Brit ability to reinforce the US Atlantic fleet. The US alone will only be able to crack Germany/Italy’s navies with all IPCs dedicated, and I have to say - Japan would then be dominating the Pacific with good carrier/transport purchases, and holding their own on land to boot.

I admire your spirit Cow! But charging uphill at a ferociously defended machine-gun nest usually results in being killed.

Don’t quit while you’re ahead cow.

    You had moomentum. :)

  • '11

Cow, everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but I don’t even see where yours have any bearing. You did not play in this particular game, nor were part of any discussion of strategy for either side. However, as most of the populace feels entitled to in this day and age, you started posting a tirade and ridicule towards players whom you clearly don’t know, and whose A&A strategies I would trust any day, compared to your off the cuff comments. And I personally will file any of your future game theories in the circular bin, next to the BS folders.

  • May I respectfully declare this thread officially closed?

Team Headless Neds lost, Team Imhotep won, end of story. There is only this one fate. It is done. Gollum and the Ring of Power have melted into the fires of Mount Doom, and they can never come back.
