• In your opinion, how much of A&A (well, not just normal A&A, but Europe and Pacific) is luck of the roll. I mean, of course there’s strategy but how much do you think depends on dice-rolling. To me, I would say….hm… about 35 - 45% of the game is just pure luck. So what do you think?

  • If played well by both sides…

    *A&A…10%(which equals the Axis chances.)
    *A&AE…50%(which equals the Axis chances.)
    *A&AP…10%(which equals the Allies chances.)

    *Judging from my experience.

  • It’s hard to say how much is strategy and how much is luck since some battles are much more important than others, for example, losing the german attacks with a few bad dice rolls is horrible, but the usa losing in finland turn 1 isn’t nearly as bad.

I think it depends on who you are playing. If all players are equally experienced, then wouldn’t it be 100% luck (equal ability in non-luck game always result in a draw)

If you are much more experienced, then it doesn’t really matter how lucky they are, you will win almost no matter what.

So it can range from 0-100% depending on who you are playing

  • Well… I like a certain amount of luck thrown into games. I was never really a fan of Castle Axis and Allies (a chess version of A&A [ie without any dice rolls]) or chess in general, so luck is always a welcome addition. Besides as Rommel said, “To risk little is to win little.”

But my thoughts on the luck factor?
From what I’ve seen on A&A, about 20-30% of the game is based on luck, depending on how desperate and aggressive the Axis player is.

  • @lnxduk:

So it can range from 0-100% depending on who you are playing

Yeah … I’ll have to go with Inxduk on this one. But to me … it seems like the game usually comes down to just a few key battles and the luck of roll can really change the game. Although, overall – I’d have to say that it usually (not always) works out evenly for both sides. You win some and you lose some … and it’s not always because of the dice – although, the can be a big factor (mainly in those key battles).

  • I can agree, though I think luck is needed by the Axis to a greater degree. Most of Allied attacks tend to be very conservative, though for the Axis, they pretty much have to set the World Ablaze on T1.

TG – Do you attack with GER on G1 when playing RR?

I’ve only recently played RR … and I was just wondering if it’s possible to take KAR on G1 playing RR?

  • My suggestion against a good Ally player, NEVER attack KAR with Germany T1. KAR is just too strong for it to be taken (you’re looking at a stack of 15-17 inf, not counting any ftrs or ARM) by any German player. Besides, even if you do manage to take it, the Russian can easily counterattack the next turn and destroy what’s left of the German army (most likely unprotected Panzers). My suggestion with Germany is to play defensively on the Eastern Front and let Japan apply pressure on Moscow. :)

  • That’s exactly what I’ve seen happen in the (3) RR games that I’ve played. It usually takes GER several rounds (at least 5) before it has a window of opportunity to attack KAR (i.e. reasonable shot of wining).

  • Well like I said it’s not just winning the battle of Leningrad but holding it. That is the key to victory. Too many times I’ve seen a German player lose patience and take KAR only to have it bite him in the arse afterwards. How?

    Here are several reasons.

    A) Russia counterattacks, taking KAR back and effectively removing Germany as an offensive threat
    B) UK/USA lands forces in Karelia in EE or KAR, either catching the German army in a pincer or crushing it outright
    C) UK/USA land at W Europe, knowing that there is no German Panzers to counterattack

My suggestion, if you want Germany to be aggressive, the Eastern Front is not the place to do it. Instead concentrate on the African Front.
