EBay refuses to list Yukon artist’s ‘weasel’ cards

WHITEHORSE - An artist in Yukon who created pictures of playing cards mocking the administration of U.S. President George W. Bush has been told he can’t sell them on EBay – and received death threats for even trying.

Dawson City artist John Steins had his listings removed from the U.S.-based Internet auction site late last month, ostensibly for violating its “Faces, Names and Signatures” policy.

The policy prevents selling of a person’s likeness without his or her permission.

Steins, however, believes the move was made because of complaints from angry EBay members.

He has created a parody of the White House’s deck of cards featuring its most-wanted Iraqis.

In the linocut deck – which he calls the “Axis of Weasels” – Bush is the ace of spades. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld is the queen. Vice-President Dick Cheney is the deuce.

Steins is undeterred by either EBay or the hate mail he has received.

“I think an artist has to use their talent to make a statement that they really believe in, though it might be really unpopular,” he said.

Steins has registered his own Web site – www.thebushadministration.com – where he’s posted the images for sale, along with email from supporters and detractors, and his correspondence with EBay.

  • I thought somebody came out with those already.

  • Well, first, it’s the Pentagon’s deck, not the White House’s.
There was the 55 Most Wanted Deck(maybe not the official name.) Then came the original Deck of Weasels(liberals who disagreed[politicians, diplomats, actors, etc.) by Newsmax. The last big item deck out there was the Deck of Hillary(also by Newsmax.)

This deck of Weasels is an attempt to profit by piggybacking on a better known item’s name. I was not impressed by the artists work. I’ve seen better pictures of the GWB Administration on the editorial pages
