My Axis & Allies 1942 Room…

@sweetchops27 Surprised that Senussi isn’t on here as an Ottoman-Aligned Territory (land area could be in-between Cyrenaica and Egypt) . If you don’t want to add more territories, you could very well replace Cyrenaica with it and make it north and south instead of west and east.

A little over a month ago I started work on a custom board based on the original design of the Spring 1942 board. I spent about 4 hours every morning and four hours each night for a whole week designing the new map. It is 55 inches by 36 inches.

It started off with me taking the original board and taking several pictures of it. I took a single photo of each of the six panels, and closeups of the production chart, mobilization zone and of course took a top-down image as you see here.

I used this top-down image as the reference to start outlining. I knew that there was a lot of distortion from the photo I took, but that’s no matter to me, it adds to the character if things don’t look 100% accurate.

After the fourth night, I officially had completed the outlining. I wanted to keep all of the coastal details that were in the original game. I knew based off geological maps that the coastlines in this game look almost nothing like the real ones, but it was too big of a detail to not keep.

After the outlining was done, I threw over some kinda decent textures into each zone and blended wooded to desert areas. It was so fast of a thing to do that I didn’t get progress pictures. This photo however shows some of the zone colors I decided to do, and the art direction I took.

I added in the text and logo designs, altered the filters I threw over the map and ended up with this as a somewhat final product.

Here is a picture of the entire map completed that also featured a similar under-running board. Each side has their own IPC chart, the battle strip is integrated, the casualty zone is integrated and the mobilization zone is updated and integrated.

The next step was to go to www.bagsoflove.com and order a testing sheet of the Neoprene so I could confirm the print quality. It arrived and everything was to size and looked great!

If you guys want to use this design, here’s a Google Drive link you can use to download it. It should be 11,000 x 7,200 with 200 x 200 per inch. Bags of Love did a great job with the print, however they took out the 5 pixel black border I had around it but that’s no matter to me! Be sure if you use Bags of Love, make sure it’s printed on a white background so you can keep that border but it doesn’t change much of the map if it is gone. A number of places aren’t fond of this size of project, so please do your own research before going with your service of choice. Enjoy this map! It is heavily inspired by Imperious Leader’s design, more of the fact he did it rather the actual design.

I updated my setup cards to have a front and back side to them. The front being the setup and the back having purchase info, Attack and Defense, and Images to help with identifying pieces on the board…mainly the boats. We found we have had to get the rule book out to make sure we purchase the correct boats (Destroyer vs Cruiser). It can be difficult to identify and keep track of these units. You can print these out at a local print shop. I printed on thin PVC material and had them laminated. Here are the cards.

I have no idea when the German set will ship. I think it was supposed to ship in late spring. Once the pre-orders are filled you can buy the set or groups of 5 pieces. I paint all my pieces so I could care less about color.

I checked the site out… German Set 3 is supposed to be out in “April”… so if that’s true, they got a 30 day window coming up.  Pre-Orders are “sold out”, which is worrisome to someone who didn’t get a pre-order in (c’est moi)… so no clue when the set will be available again or individual sculpts can be ordered, but I’d definitely like a lot out of that set. The Deutschland class pocket battleships would be sweet… hopefully they are sized as Cruisers and not as Battleships… and of course the ubiquitous Pz-IV is a must.  Surprised it’s taken all these years to get a Pz-IV.

To answer my own question, I am using the supreme map of IL now, IPC values are the same and so are the borders, although not necessarily always the shape of the country, but that is irrelevant.

Sorry for the late reply, been busy again and havent had time to meet up w friends and play.  I used acrylics to paint the pieces, easy stuff.to use and cheap.too, Michael’s is a good place.to buy some. I used a spray on glossy finish om the pieces themselves. The hardest units to paint was the infantry, so many details on them, straps, satchels bags, canteens boots and rifles, that takes lots of.time. the easiest units was the ships, just paint all grey, let them.dry then fill in the details like the deck and a roundel.

Its Army Painters desert yellow. I have a set of German officers froms Odermars coming, that will be be the next set that Ill be painting. It should keep me busy till HBGs german set is ready.
