There’s no official answer that I know of. A&A is such an abstracted game that, in one sense, it would be meaningless to say that game unit X corresponds to real-world military (or naval) formation Y. Given the scope of A&A Global 1940, however, the various unit types on the map would roughly correspond to large formations if we were to assume that the allocation of units in the rules corresponds to real WWII numbers. As an example, Germany’s invasion of the USSR was carried out with over 150 divisions – so from that perspective, the small number of sculpts on the actual board could at best only correspond to army groups. At that level, it shouldn’t even be possible to differentiate between the components of the army groups, nor even of their consitutent armies or corps; the highest-level tank formations in WWII were, I think, armoured divisions and (one level further down) tank brigades. So one way to look at the game would be to imagine that we’re not actually seeing the military formations themselves, but rather a patchwork picture showing some of the elements of those formations, with some of these elements being high-level ones and others being lower-level ones (like tank brigades).

I’m still in favor of a mechanized artillery piece which can function as a TD.

Problem is…i don’t think there were any significant number of self propelled artillery in WWII.
Meaning blitzing artillery and artillery that attack on 2 spaces would be historically inaccurate.A mech artillery unit that could move 2 spaces in NONCOMBAT move only would be more historically accurate.

Ok unit is a 3-2-1-5 unit.
But moves 2 in NCM
if it rolls one in combat, another tank or armor class unit must be taken as loss by defender.

So you don’t think the Hummel, StuG, M-7 Priest or M-18 could move 2 spaces or blitz? These vehicles were build on tank chassis and were somewhat lighter than tanks so they would be able to keep up with tanks and mechs. Even though they were limited by having a fixed gun that couldn’t traverse side-to-side, they were a little cheaper to make and had a few advantages over tanks. This is why I suggested keeping them the same cost as tanks (@ 6) with less firepower on attack (since they were usually more defensive in nature) and gave them the special ability to target enemy armor at a 1.
There were a lot of SPGs and tank destroyers built during the war, I know Germany made a lot of them. Tanks just got more attention. -
I stand corrected.
Though the StuG and M-18 were tank destroyers not artillery. -
@derek I like the Idea of a towed AT Gun: A2 D2 M1 C4 that can target enemy armor (Tanks & Mechs) on a 1. Self-propelled AT Guns: A2 D2 M2 C5 that can target enemy armor are good too.
I have not heard anybody address the issue of whether or not Armored units can target the AT guns. Both are line of sight firing units, so it stands to reason that both could target each other.
Also, does one Tank activate the targeting ability of more than one AT Gun? That is, If one tank is part of an attack where the defender has 4 AT guns, can all four target the tank? What if 2 hits are rolled? Is the extra hit wasted? AT shot would have no effect on Infantry.
Another way of giving the AT gun a special ability is to give them a +1 whenever enemy tanks are present. This ability would be “activated” on a 1 to 1 basis. This method is not as satisfying or realistic, but it is faster, and fits in with the A&A system better.
Has anybody done any playtesting on this or are we all just arguing hypotheticals? -
@magnum The people you are talking too are most likely no longer here. Lets find another 10 year old thread to respond too…

I can wait for ten more years for a reply.
