That was a pretty intense battle you rolled. I have to say I was hoping to see a big Navy battle like that. I love that stuff. Fascists killing Communists (and vice-versa) on the frozen steppes of Russia never did anything for me, but I get excited thinking about the American and Japanese Navies going at it in the Pacific!
I read an article a few weeks ago by Don Rae who was talking about strategies for Classic. He said “Any player death that occurs by or before turn 7 in the Axis and Allies game is a result of stupid purchasing, nothing more, nothing less.” I was hoping to avoid being called stupid by Don Rae, but as I look at what the Axis is doing to me near the end of turn 3 I’m starting to wonder, lol!
I learn the most when I’m losing - probably because I have to think harder. Needless to say I’m learning a lot in a short span of time…
I rarely face a KJF Kill Japan First. You caught me a bit unprepared, a good thing, if you don’t plan for the unexpected….
Air purchases for Russia is also a different strategy, it has its pros and cons. I am having a hard time moving small forces around with that air threat. On the other hand, if the Japs can hold out for a bit then the Russians being a bit lighter with boots on the ground will tend to get pushed around.
I made a stupid mistake in the attack on your navy. My sub is Sz47 should have move to Sz 50 first before attacking, that way a retreat could have gone to Sz50 rather than 47. That would be much more preferable. I didn’t anticipate having to retreat. I was willing to lose my fighters if need be as I could fly 2 more in during non-combat. But I had to keep the CV, DD and 2 BBs and I nearly lost the game. That last roll was a roll of desperation. You could have won the game right there. Regardless, I will be feeling the ramifications of that failed attack.
