Russia and german forces in same sea zone

@Aaron_the_Warmonger I don’t know exactly the long term goal in Italian hands. The only conclusion I can come up with is to give Italy more of a northern Can Opening attack as well as give Italy more money for longer term play. Again, I find this foolish since it serves great use for Germany anyways. It’s been talked about, as said before, I’ve never seen it done and I have no plans to do it if I am ever Axis. I can see Bulgaria going Italian but not Finland.

Must you send a lone sub against a huge fleet that is blocking the way that is preventing you from bringing a carrier into position (say during NCM) to pick up planes that could potentially survive and need a landing space from some other battle, even though you “know” that you cannot win this battle in any event and that the planes will end up ditching?

Yes in low luck, and yes without.  The only hitch here is that you MUST send the sub to make this attack.  You cannot win a battle you do not attempt to fight.

I do see what you are saying, that in low luck, there are no “hits and misses” and therefore, since the attack could never be won without immense luck, that it doesn’t meet the summary judgment rule (all attacker hits and all defender misses).  But as you also mention, low luck is a tacked-on rule, so we just go back to what it says in the main rulebook;  if there is any chance no matter how slight of you winning, you can bring the fighters as long as you make some attempt with at least 1 unit to clear the crucial zone.  The sub still meets the test of the rule even though low luck makes its odds go from 1% to 0%.

What if we attack the blocking fleet with a (damaged?) aircraft carrier, alone, which has no combat rating and therefore, can never “inevitably” hit?  Maybe this is an even gameyer test of this rule (though we may find some other rule that states that you have to bring at least 1 attacker with attack value into a combat…)

That’s okay, I would also increase the number of German submarines on the board and put some convoy zones out in the mid North Atlantic that hurt US Economy (and UK Economy)

But then, if we implemented my changes, the Germans would need a significant bid again probably.  So yea, in the case of game balance, realism does need to take a back seat (that is not to say forget it completely!)

How many subs do you recommend attacking SZ106 with? 2 subs or 3 subs? If the answer is 3 subs that leaves only 2 subs to attack SZ109 with, along with one FTR and one S. Bomber. I don’t see any other aircraft that can reach SZ109 on the first turn. Attacking SZ109 w/only 2 subs seems a little light, as the UK can scramble 3 FTR’s to help rescue SZ109. So I’m guessing the best strategy is to attack SZ109 w/3 subs to help absorb casualties, in case the UK player scrambles? And only attack SZ106 w/2 subs? If only Germany had one more sub…

It sounds like this became a three-way war:  USSR vs US & UK vs Japan.  I assume that the US and UK were still at war with Japan in the Pacific?

I played a game a while back that was kind of similar.  Basically, Japan never went to war with USA or UK but just attacked China and Russia.  On the other side, Germany and Italy never attacked Russia and only fought with USA and UK.  Well, Germany and Italy ended up getting pounded into the dust.  Japan actually made good progress capturing all of China and getting close to taking Moscow.  One reason for this is most of Russia’s heavy stuff was up against the German border and it took time to get it all east to face the Japanese.  Once Japan got through that 18 infantry, there wasn’t much to stop them from making quick progress.  Once US and UK got finished with Germany and Italy, they decided to side with Japan and declared war on Russia to rid the world of Communism.  Once that happened, Russia fell pretty quickly.  The large US and UK forces that were already in Europe just leap-frogged each other taking Soviet territories and closing in on Moscow from the west while Japan closed in from the east with their massive air force.
One strange thing was here Japan had this huge and powerful navy which was basically useless.  All those ships ended up clustered in SZ 6 and just rusted away from inaction.
