Experimental Alpha 4 Game - Wrongway Corrigan vs. Noll

  • 1.) UK fleet in 91, 98, 110, 112 move to 111 (includes tac bomb on cv)
    2.) Naval base in Scotland
    3.) airbase on Gibraltar
4.) fighter on Malta and gib removed, moved to Scotland
    5.) interceptors shoot at 2
6.) USSR Dow rights delayed to Round 6
7.) USA DOW rights delayed to Round 8
8.) One consolidated income for UK, to be used as they see fit

Look at the list.  If I meant end of Round 7 during collect income wouldn’t I have said that?  Isn’t it more logical that I was saying collect income of R8, unless attacked by another country first?

  • I thought we were following the rules in the most similar way to the alpha3, but ok if I can dow at the start of R8 this means I don’t get the wartime bonus, so just remove 25 IPCs from USA and let’s go on.

  • if you mean AT THE END of round8 lots of things change!
    Let me know.

  • If that’s the way you want to play it, ok.  However, my intention really was that R8 was taking the place of R3.  R3 collect income is when USA can DOW without being attacked.

  • The way it was worded was open to misinterpretations, I don’t care about the result of the game (I mean if I win or you win), I care more about seeing if this thing works and can be a standard home rule variant.
I certainly think that USA delayed that much could be a bit too harsh especially in the scenario that Germany, Italy and Japan focuses on Russia starting from early turns. Anyway you’re the one deciding.

  • It could be tough on Russia.  We should play test that.

In this set up, Russia is more likely to get the Archangel bonus, not that that’s a game changer necessarily.

As you’ve started to do in the other game, it is more likely in this set up that UK can get troops into Novgorod the way they did in classic, thru the scotland to novgorod passage directly.

Let’s give this playtest the same benefit of the doubt we give the standard set up.

  • also in a game where the germans can’t just crush the english navy, I think that germany is going to have a hard time rushing into moscow.

if anything actually, I believe that this set up is more favorable to the allies than the axis, at least relative to the latest alpha 3.

  • Would you like to start testing me playing Axis and you playing Allies at the same conditions?

  • With USA able to DOW on their collect income of R8?

Incidentally, I probably was going to attack with Japan on R8 anyway, so the net impact is mainly just that you don’t get your war income R7.

If it can be proved that a Japan-Italy-Germany rush on Moscow breaks this alternative set up, then I would propose that a Japan DOW against Russia brings the USA into the war.  Actually it’s always kind of bothered me that Japan could attack and not automatically bring the UK against them automatically.  Whoever heard of being in a war where your ally was attacked and you didn’t go to war with the people that attacked them?

If Germany and Italy can still rush Moscow and win all the time, I would probably propose additional convoy NOs to balance (Siberia, Middle East etc)

  • @Noll:

Wait so you mean at the END of round8?
I thought it was like the regular game, US in reality declares war at round4, but collects his wartime income at the end of round3, isn’t it?

The current rule actually states that the USA declares war during their collect income phase of R3.  Not that they declare war on R4.

  • Ok we must be clear about it, so you mean at the end of R8.

I have some ideas with the Axis, check them yourself:

The plan is: Even if UK has a nice navy, he doesnt really treat you that much alone.

You have both Italy and Germany to counter any UK landing.

Plan A: Consolidate a big economy.

Attack the True Neutrals during G3. UK India can’t stand a double push of Germany + Italy in the middle east.
Now you can attack Russia from Romania and from the Caucasus route, without the need of any navy.

    J1 -> Attack China
    J2 -> Build a Major in Korea
J3 -> Attack Russia from the North route. Buy fast units (mec inf / some arms) bring there your airforce. Keep pushing China.

Starting Japanese territories+US NO+at least 9ipcs from Russia will be nice.

What would you do as the allies in 8 turns without US?

  • Wait it’s 9 turns actually, due to USA declaring war at the end of turn 8

  • Did we agree that a Japanese DOW against the USSR, would allow USSR to DOW against Germany and Italy?

  • no

  • I’d leave it as it is for this game and the re-match at least and see what happens, then tweak it.

Btw do you like this format so far? What would you change?

  • I like this but I also recognize that this is going to produce a longer game then most people want.

Every version of axis and allies that I am aware of made the crushing of the UK’s fleet part of the standard German opening.  Changing that is major and for the good, but I am not yet sure that it is not unbalancing.

I really don’t know whether a fast attack on Russia will produce an automatic victory or not.  Perhaps Japan should lose its peace NO when it DOWs against Russia.

You may try it, but I don’t see off hand that the attack thru turkey is more effective than the standard line of attack, other than you emphasize the oil objectives rather than the Novgorod objective.

  • I might still want to try the coordinated attack turns.  I would not allow Germany and Italy to use a combined turn until the end of the first round with Italy’s 1st and Germany’s 2nd turn.  This makes some historical sense since it’s my understanding that Italy did not enter the war until after Germany invaded France.

The new turn sequence would be

    1.) Germany alone R1
    2.) USSR
    3.) Japan
    4.) Democratic Allies
    5.) Italy/Germany, then to USSR

  • In addition, I would like to modify the neutral rules:

1.) Friendly neutrals.  Instead of persuasion by invasion, try influencing them with ipcs.  Choose 1-5 ipcs per friendly neutral, roll a die, if it’s your investment or less, you’ve persuaded them to join your cause.  Can only persuade those in your sphere of influence.  For the USA, this is Brazil.  The UK gets all other allied friendly neutrals.  Germany gets all of the axis friendly neutrals.

2.) True Neutrals – the allies can’t invade them.  The axis can, but if they do, the allies get an automatic investment of 3 ipcs per round in each allied friendly or true neutral territory.  The allies can add up to an additional 2 ipcs each round, but they can never automatically persuade a neutral by making an investment total of 6 ipcs.

Consider making a Japanese invasion of the USSR grounds for a USA DOW.
