Sorry to interrupt but in sz 91 when the UK attacked 2 subs with a Battleship and a Cruiser in round one, if the defender chose to fight, the subs would have got a first strike at the Battleship and Cruiser because there is no UK destroyer. Then the Battleship and Cruiser would return fire. Because there is no destroyer the subs can submerge and thats the end of the battle. So to sum it up the only way to attack a sub is to have a destroyer present in the battle unless the defender chooses to fight.
I’m not so sure about that. After the attacker fires, the subs could opt to submerge (which they would certainly do), but only if they survive. If I had a destroyer, then they couldn’t submerge at all. In this case, both subs were hit on the first shot. But thanks Def!
Nope they can submerge before the attacker fires. So those two subs in sz 91 can still be alive but thats up to the defender. You still done that battle incorrect as the defending subs get to fire their suprise attack first. Pg 29 of the Europe rule book.
OK I actually did roll shots from the subs after (not before) they were mistakenly sunk, and they both missed. So I will just replace his subs and move on. Live and learn. It still seems bizarre to me that a defending sub can do the “surprise” strike (i.e. wouldn’t they be the ones being surprised?).
I dont think its meant to be thought like that, its just more of an advantage for the submarine and its name is suprise strike.
