Greeting and salutations! I have recently created overlays for HBGs Global 1936 map that represent the political borders of 1861. I am aware that several years ago now HBG worked on a Global 1861 game. However as far as I can tell, HBGs Global 1861 project seems to have been shelved. Myself being a firm believer in the versatility of the Axis and Allies game mechanics have thus decided to create my own Global 1861 scenario. While further testing is still required and new political and possibly unit rules still have to be written. I am confident I can eventually create a comprehensive Global 1861 game. Although I feel I must apologize in advance if this project takes a long while as I tend to jump from project to project quite spastically, any help and or feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I don’t know but can find out. Really i just found these little games when i downloaded info from an old external hard-drive on my new computer. I have like 50 other game file/modules that i have also found , but pertain to Classic wargames like AH Third Reich, Stalingrad, D-Day, Battle of the Bulge, Waterloo, Victory in the Pacific, War at Sea, and countless others.

I even redid Shogun with cards and rules, map, etc

I believe around the year 2004 I purchased two great axis and allies maps created by a gentleman by the name of Ralph Boerke from Waterloo Canada.  The maps were laminated and the first one was a 1942 world map.  The second one was a Europe only map.  Anyways I just found both maps at my parents house. I have played the world map and loved it as Ralph included different rules for his game.  The Europe only map is huge! I never played it though :(. Has anyone ever played this A&A Europe map created by Ralph?  I know he was working on a pacific map also and wondered if he ever released it?

I think it might make more sense to just return Australia to a single territory rather than two.

I have tried games before testing the idea of splitting islands across sea zones (basically a reverse definition) it has the effect of making bombardments more significant, and fleets less likely to engage on attack (they tend to camp defend  relying instead on amphibious.) Splitting islands also increases fighter movement in a somewhat overpowered way, so you have to be careful. I think with an interesting starting unit placement you can accomplish a lot. Australia as a single territory would have greater reach for any fighters landed there, and the scale of the territory warrants it a bit more then solomons.

I think the best approach is to tilt Japan slightly counter clockwise at the southern tip of the island to make more room for ships. And then put the alignment for the smaller islands based of the relative distance between Australia Hawaii and the three major island territories (East Indies, Borneo, and Philippines). I will play up the focus on the key islands (though some of those chains were involved Palau and the Marianas and such. On the whole though I think the stepping stones out of W. USA would be the most interesting way to change the Pacific dynamic. Force both players to defend their coastlines instead of drop south so easily with everything.

Will redraft it sometime on Tuesday when I get a break from work.

Thanks for the advise. From what I have read so far, I knew option #1 would be expensive and I am getting close to the point where I just don’t care. But I will start with Doug first in order to weigh out my options.

By the way, your wall mount (magnet) idea is genius!

I got this file a long time ago and decided to make some changes and ‘ghost’ the classic setup upon it.

It has a slightly different dynamic than standard 2nd edition. I also have a 2 page rules file that i am still locating. Obviously neutrals are in play.

You are correct.  I had done it before.  Unfortunetaly, the map was too big.  So I made it a standard 20 inch by 30 inch map.  Since I sell these on ebay, I needed to be able to get it laminated  :-D.

I am almost done with it.  Just need to get a few more things together.
