Both players have to be thinking both that they don’t want to give anything to their opponent and they want to a good position if htey end up with allies. I think that might lead to well placed but low cost units (which along with a fig or two makes the most sense in a standard bid game.

I agree the dice haven’t helped, but I’ve also had the economic advantage for all but 2 rounds this game, so it might not have done more than speed up the outcome. If you like I can give you an analysis from my perspective if you’re like me and try to learn new strategy from playing others. For instance, I will definitely be copying your American air force strategy in the future; I think it’s brilliant.
